The last day of June came up pretty quickly and before I knew it my bags were packed by the door and my mom was starting the car. I said goodbye to my dad and promised him I'd call him as often as I could. I would be gone for two months, which is the longest I've ever been away from home. A few minutes later I was in the car with my mom driving away from our small house in Austin, Texas to a rural town in New Mexico that I couldn't even remember the name of.
We arrived at the facility several hours later at about three in the afternoon. We walked up to the front door and pressed the buzzer. A few seconds later the door opened and we were led inside by a tall man in a white uniform. We walked down a long, empty corridor and then the man turned to my mom.
"This is as far as you can go ma'am." He said in a deep voice.
"Oh, okay." She said. She turned to me and gave me a hug and whispered typical motherly things in my ear like to pay attention and listen and do as I'm told. Then she gave me my bag and walked back outside, looking back over her shoulder and smiling at me. The man started walking again and I followed him. He led me to a large room with three sets of bunk beds and six small dressers.
"This is the girl's room. Pick a bed and a dresser; they will be yours until you leave. The girl's bathroom is right across the hallway." With that, the man left and disappeared around the corner. I looked around the room and saw that two beds were already occupied. One by a girl with curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She looked pretty nice and was sitting and reading a book. The other girl had dyed black and red hair and was laying down listening to music through her ear buds. She had already carved her name into the wood on the bed frame. It read, "Phoenix" in messy block letters. I picked the top bunk on the remaining empty bunk bed and soon after I laid down, I fell asleep. I woke up a few hours later to a girl with short blonde hair shaking me and telling me that we had to report to the lab. I jumped off the bed and followed the girls down the hallway. I noticed there were two more girls than when I first arrived: the blonde who woke me up, and a short, dark-haired girl.
We arrived in the lab, and it was very impressive. There were all sorts of machines that I could only imagine what they could do. I stared in awe as who I assumed the leader of this whole program came to stand in front of us. I looked to my left and noticed there were also five boys who joined us. One of them stood out in particular. He was tall, with dark brown hair and light brown eyes. Our eyes met and I looked away quickly, blushing, The man cleared his throat and we all looked up at him.
"My name is Jacob Pierson. You can call me Professor or Mr. Pierson. In these next two months you will be helping me in my studies. You were chosen because you are some of the smartest children of your age throughout the entire country. Here is a folder with your instructions, get started." With that, he left and we all got a folder with our name on it. The papers in my folder said we would be working to create new medicines to help cure sick people with different diseases. Without further delay, we got to work.
