I couldn't believe how my heart raced every time Caleb looked at me. His forest green eyes lit up a spark that drew me in like a moth to a flame. Was it even possible to love another human being this much?
One evening, we were lying on the moistened grass in the park surrounded by the chirping of crickets. Caleb's hand found mine as we looked up into the sky, sending a jolt of electricity through me. My breath caught in my throat, causing me to cough. Caleb chuckled softly, the sound like music to my ears.
"You're so beautiful, Avery," he whispered, his like a gentle breeze. I turned my head slowly to the side, leading my eyes into his. I blushed, feeling a rush of warmth spread across my cheeks.
"Stop it, Caleb." You're making me blush."
We both sat up with our hands supporting our upper bodies. He leaned in closer, his breath tickling my ear.
"I can't help it. You're irresistible."
As we sat there, the moon casting a soft glow on our faces, I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. But at that moment, with Caleb by my side, all my doubts melted away, and I allowed myself to get lost in the sweetness of his laughter and the melody of his hums. Little did I know, danger lurking just around the corner. Making my now perfect life, a living hell that no one should be able to go through.
It's Friday morning as I take a step beside my bed, not being able to get out of the warm sheets that are begging for me to stay and sleep the day away. Unfortunately, I have to complete six whole hours in school before I can do that.
As I do my makeup in the bathroom I put on a song I've been playing on repeat since my best friend Natalie begged me to hear it on the speaker and turn up the volume. I do a small run down the stairs as I fold my shirt into my jeans, trying to look as presentable to my classmates as possible.
"Here's your breakfast." My mom hands me a toast before we both head out the front door.
"Thanks," I said and waved goodbye to her as I turned around a corner and made my way to the bus stop that was 2 kilometers away from home.
When I got on the bus I went to my usual seat on the right side and waited for Natalie to get on the bus, but that's two stops away, so meanwhile I decided to call Caleb.
"Good morning, Cal," I say as I plug the other earplug into my ear, so no one other than I will be able to hear our conversation.
"Good morning to you too, babe." I hear Caleb mumble as he yawns into the microphone.
"Haven't you got up yet?" I ask the same question every day I call in the morning as if I don't know the answer already.
"No, it's only 7 am, I'll probably take 5 more minutes when you've hung up on me,"
I smirked.
"Are you coming to the party tonight?" Caleb suddenly asks.
"What party?" I ask.
"Xander is throwing a party at around 10, are you coming?"
I hate parties, and Caleb knows that, but whenever I get the chance to be together with someone I love, I'll take it. It's not like I'm getting drunk, and if so, no one is forcing me to do it.
"Sure," I reply, and before Caleb can answer my declaration, the bus stops, and Natalie throws herself on the seat beside me.
"I have to go, Caleb. Love you, and see you at school." I managed to say before hanging up the call. I then locked my phone, took out my earplugs, and turned halfway towards Natalie.
"Have you done your homework?" Natalie asked nervously. I looked at her and gave the "Are you serious" look for the fifteenth time this week.
"I know, I just-" She started before I'd cut her off.
"You can just copy some of my answers."
I don't get it. Before, I was the one who was late to hand in my assignments, do my homework, or even show up. Now, it's like we have changed roles. But, I get it. Life is sometimes too stressful to manage all the plans you make. I thought as I looked out the window and zoned out.
