"Bye, Dad! I'm going to the market, I'll be back soon!"

-I had no intention of going to the market; my true purpose was to find that boy. I had never lied before, especially not to my father. Although I loved my dad, my curiosity overpowered my guilt and led me to lie to him.

I was well aware of my father's tendency to be overprotective, so I knew he had taken all necessary measures to ensure my safety. I was confident that he had enlisted others to also keep an eye on me. Because of this, I made sure to cover myself with a scarf. It was quite cold out anyway, so I had an excuse for that too!

I purposefully walked past the markets and happily explored my district. I wasn't exactly sure where I was headed, but I enjoyed the little scenery that this place had to offer along the way.

It wasn't long until I noticed this 'Gyutaro' came up in the surrounding people's hushed conversations. I took it as a hint that maybe he lived around here. The houses around me were deteriorating, reminding me of the growing gap between the wealthy and the poor. It left me feeling like I was at the bottom rung of the social ladder with no hope of climbing higher.

Sure, I was accustomed to living in thick layers of mould and paper-thin walls. However, I never knew it could get worse than what my neighbours and I were living in. Being confined within my father's sight, I could not explore and understand the true nature of my district. As a result, my knowledge of the district remained limited.

As I marched ahead, my mind was buzzing with ideas at lightning speed. Abruptly, something caught my attention, and I swiftly took charge to investigate it. My thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the sound of whispering and shuffling. As I turned to investigate, I noticed a group of women huddled together, their heads bent down and hands covering their noses. I couldn't quite make out what had captured their attention.

Feeling uncertain, I took cover behind a wall and waited for the scene to unfold. "Are they throwing rocks at something?" -I took a few moments to contemplate the situation before firmly grasping its full implications. I found the boy, and what I uncovered was nothing short of alarming. The truth about how he was treated left me appalled.
