August 2020, the day of my very first interview. I knew being signed at Williams for the first time was going to be stressful, but I never realized just how stressful it would be.
As I zoned back in I could finally hear the interviewer talking to me.
"So, before we start, inform us on who you are." He spoke in my direction, as the cameraman beside him pointed his camera towards me.
"My name is Valentine Martinez, I'm 22 years old and I've recently been signed onto Williams to race alongside my brother, Nikolai."
"Where are you from, Val?"
"I'm from the Wallis and Futuna Islands originally but I grew up in Peru for the majority of my childhood before my father moved to Monaco."
He continued to question and I answered, the questions he asked were simple, and I could tell he was just trying to ease me into the interview.

"How do you feel about being the only female to drive in Formula One for this season? And do you have anything to say for any girls who possibly see you as an inspiration?" The interviewer questioned me. I sat there thinking for a little bit before smiling.
"Well, it's scary, being young and surrounded by men who are much more experienced than you are. But I am willing to do everything to prove that I'm just as capable as they are." I paused, trying to come up with something to say next.
"To all of the girls who want to grow up and become Formula One drivers, or get into Motorsports. Do it, follow your dreams. People are going to judge you, they're going to do what it takes to ruin those dreams, prove them wrong. Prove you're capable of being in this sport," As I finished, I took a breath and smiled, waiting for a response from the interviewer.
However, all I got was a simple nod as he reciprocated a smile before he moved on to the next question.
"Well, I have one last question for you Valentine. Since you are new, do you have anything you wish to say to your opponents? Especially your brother?"
"Well to all my new opponents, I hope you go easy on me." I laughed before continuing, "No I'm only joking, but to all of them, I just hope I can prove myself. And to my brother, I hope you know I'm going to be the better Martinez driver!" I finished my statement and laughed a little once more. Once he had finished with my questions, he moved on to the next driver. I sat back in my chair and sighed a little, knowing I could now relax as we simply waited for the interview to finish.
After a little while, it had finally concluded, we said our thanks and left the room as quickly as we could. As soon as I was out of that room, I yawned and tried to stretch my upper body a little.
"Feeling a little stiff?" Came a voice from behind me. Turning around, my eyes were happily met with the face of the reason I joined this sport.
"Yeah, being sat in those chairs hasn't exactly done wonders for my back." I replied jokingly, stretching my arms as best as I could. He rolled his eyes, clearly unamused by me. Ignoring him I just carried on stretching.
"Val. Do you really believe what you said earlier?"
I stared blankly at him, unsure of how to answer.
"I'm gonna be honest Kimi, I don't. I mean I'm 22, driving for Williams. I know I'm not going to suddenly become the next Senna or Shumacher. If anything I'll be gone in a few years." I chuckled a little, trying to lighten the mood but he was clearly bothered by my answer.
"Never expected you to be the next Shumacher. Just wondered if what you said was just to get the interviewers to shut up or not."
I simply nodded to his answer, which he didn't take as a sign to leave me be.
"Oh by the way, some of us are going out for dinner. Got told to invite you too."
Perking up at the sound of this, I noticed a little smirk appear on his face. The conversation carried on, and we talked over the plans for tonight.
