ARU'S POV:
I woke startled as voices rushed into my head.
"No! D-don't take her, take me!" Krithika Shah had sobbed.
I had seen the way Suyodhona had looked at her, full of pride, and guilt — guilt that he couldn't watch his daughter grow up. Yet somehow, he did.
I opened her eyes to a worried Kara, staring down at me.
"Actually, um, I think it would be best to skip today's events," Kara said, her eyes betrayed her true intentions, and with one quick glance, I could see the worry blossoming in her eyes.
"Nope. We ain't skipping, I'll be down in ten, see ya!" I ushered Kara out of the room and flopped onto the bed. I laid there with her eyes closed until her mom's screech summoned her downstairs. With a sigh, I got up and peered into her closet. I emerged wearing a denim jacket, oversized lightning bolt shirt, black leggings, gold sneakers, and a single French braid down her back she'd managed in the two minutes before my mom burst in.
"Mom, it was unlocked, you didn't need to kick it down. This is the third time this week!" I reprimanded.
"Yes, yes," Mom murmured absently, not her usual self.
I could sense that something was amiss, my mom usually listened to everything her daughter - MOI- had to say with an amused expression on her face as she shook her head. But today was different, today she just tuned out everything I ranted to her about. This was not normal. Yet, today was nothing special. For the last two years, ever since becoming one of the "Ruling Sixteen" families, or as I liked to call them, 'The Snobby Eleven!', they'd been summoned frequently. Everyone but our - The Potatoes' parents ignored it, yet in public, they acted like they were actively saving everyone's ass and people should be indebted to them. Losing track of time and space, I face-planted onto the floor, as I had expected there to be another stair. Blushing furiously, I got up and dusted myself off only to meet the gazes of maids and butlers. I quickly jogged up to Mom, who was walking so fast, that you would think she was running without running.
I tried to say something sarcastic to my mom for not noticing her daughter's epicly horrendous face-plant, but I got a wee bit side-tracked when I saw the sight before her. A bunch of random dudes were taking turns to kiss Kara's hand, standing there, eyes full of yearning, hoping that Kara would notice them.
Well, I certainly wasn't surprised at this sight, well at least not entirely, except for the fact Kara, the very same twin sister who rejected guys without knowing their name, was giggling. A handsome guy who was charming her sister while wearing skinny jeans and a hoodie, he looked like a player who knew he didn't have to try hard to look good. A player who had hoodwinked my sister, my jaw-dropping sister. Kara had long, luscious caramel coloured hair, a tan complexion, and honey eyes that just made you want to melt. She was wearing a mini denim jacket and a yellow dress that went to her knees, she wore white sandal-slippers that shined so bright it hurt my eyes. I glared fiercely in the direction of nowhere.
"Um, what the bleep is going on here? Isn't this supposed to be an awards ceremony or some shit?" I asked (demanded).
Kara sighed, "You weren't paying attention last night at all, were you," Kara pinched the bridge of her nose, all traces of happiness gone. "We're having a selection to see who'll become our future husband."
I sputtered in anger.
