1942, June 10
The streets were dark as always, with almost no one to be seen anywhere. As they walked, Annalise heard a noise and moved to hide; her sister Adele hadn't heard it and just stood there confused. It was clear Adele didn't know what was going on, so she just stood there frozen, like not moving would make her invisible to the human eye. Just then, a man in a Nazi uniform came down the street. Once he saw Adele, he grabbed her by the arm and pulled her to the closet of the cattle car, shoving her in.
Annalise tried her best not to cry; who wouldn't if her little sister was just taken? She was probably going to die. Annalise was able to not cry out loud, but she couldn't help the few tears that rolled down her cheeks. She didn't like the fact that her sister was gone or that she could have gotten Adele before the man showed up. Annalise couldn't help thinking it was her fault her sister was gone. Her eyes started to well up with tears again, making her vision blurry. She swallowed hard, trying to push down the tears, but only indeed up, creating a lump in her throat that she couldn't ignore. Annalise was devastated; all her family was gone now; her parents and sister were taken, not knowing what happened to them; she was on the run, most likely to have the same fate as her parents and sister; and her brother was at war, which is another unknown. Annalise didn't know if her brother was dead, if he was taken, or even if he was going to come home. All Annalise knew was that she had to find another safe place and try and survive, even just a little longer, because that would be what her family would want for her to survive.
