Oh, God. He was here, and Scarlett felt close to fainting on the inside. But she sat still, eyes wide and alert. Elanor did notice this as she got up to get the door. Tonight, she decided, she would not eat dinner with them because she really wanted Scarlett and Rhett back together. And she knew Rhett still loved her. He never admitted it, but she knew her son, and he could be very unpredictable yet predictable at the same time. It was complicated to explain, for her son was a very complicated person. He so taken after his father, Elanor thought. She put on her best smile and opened the door.

Scarlett was having trouble breathing, but she continued to sit still. She heard footsteps which meant Rhett was merely inches away. She heard the footsteps stop. She turned around and gasped at what she saw. It was Rhett, of course he looked the same, but better.

He smiled kindly at her, "Scarlett, it's nice to see you. How are you?"

Scarlett gulped, "fine," she lied, "and you?"

"Good, somewhat. Very busy. But of course you should know." He trailed off, looking at his mother.

Elanor smiled, "Well, I am awfully tired. Sorry, Rhett, but I must go to bed or I'll just flop on the floor now," She quickly left the room, snickering to herself while going to her room. Scarlett and Rhett stared at each other for a long time. Finally, Rhett broke the silence.

"Well, then. Guess I'll come another time. I must be off."

'No!' Scarlett screamed. Well, In her head. She fluttered behind him outside and closed the door.

"Wait--" She grabbed his arm

He took a deep breath, "Scarlett, no."

Scarlett begged him with her eyes, tears already starting to form, "Please--"

"Don't let me get in the way of your happy ending."

"But you are my happy ending!" She gripped his arm tighter, as if he were the only thing to hold on to, "Please, Rhett, don't," She tried to swallow the lump in her throat, "Don't do this to me."

"Scarlett, it's over, why don't you leave it be?"

"Because I know I love you and I always have and I always will and I know you love me back! You must!"

He shook his head, "No, Scarlett, I'm married now."

She held up her chin, "So?"

"So I'm married and don't love you anymore"

"That's not possible!"

"For me, it is. Goodbye, Scarlett."

He took her hand off of him and walked away.

Scarlett watched him go, tears flowing down her cheeks and she dropped to the ground, sobbing so hard she choked.

He meant it. He really meant it. Rhett did not love her anymore.
