Chapter 4:
I woke up with a start. Jessica's face hovered over mine, and her face held a smile. "Hey, sleepy head."
I just meekly nodded, happy I never talked in my sleep. "Yeah."
That caught her attenion. "You okay?"
"Yeah." I repeated, sincerely. "Never better."
"Okay." She said. "Time to get up. You have a bus to catch in an hour."
I replied by groaning and turning over to hide my face in the pillows.
...
I looked at the clock on the bathroom wall. 7 o'clock. I took a deep breath. It would be my first time taking a bus. And going to public school. I was scared as hell.
I put on a layer of lipgloss before looking myself in the mirror. Hair down, easy makeup, nice jeans and a tank top. Good.
Going down the stairs, the smell of muffins reached my nose. "Smells good."
Jessica smiled at me. "Thanks. Are you gonna be okay today?"
She handed me a chocolate muffin, and I grabbed it hungrily. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" I asked, No hint of my actual fear in my voice.
She shrugged. "I don't know. Just wondering. You're first day of school and all."
I nodded in understanding.
"You catch the bus at the Kayler's Driveway. I can walk you there if you want."
The look in Jessica's eyes made me re think my 'no'. Charolette was only 5 years old when she was sent away. She probably never went to school. Jessica wants to see one of her kids go off to school for the first time. I was as close as she would get.
"Sure." I said. "That'd be nice."
When she turned away, I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't still on the jet, dreaming. Or in my dorm room.
Ever since I came to this house yesterday, I've been thinking about other people's feelings.
Wow. Money really does do wonders.
...
Twetny minutes later, Jessica was ushering me out the door, handing me a shoulder bag with some money and my phone. She said I would need to bring my books home tonight. I never held anything in my bag but makeup when I was in Russia.
We started down the dirt road. Barbwire fences lined the road, and dead and green grass took turns covering the ground. You could hear the morning sounds of the birds and the cows, the chickens and the horses. It was nice. Quiet, but awake none the less.
My mind wandered to my dream again, and I looked up at Jessica, who was looking straight ahead.
"Jessica. Do you have a picture of Charolette?" I asked before I knew what I was saying.
She took a piece of paper out of her back pocket, and held it out to me.
Not paper, a picture. I was about to look at it when she stopped me, blocking it from view.
"Wait." She stopped walking, and so did I. She listened.
I heard the sounds of people. I looked down the road to see Jed, Kennidi, Lily, Grant, Hanna and three other boys.
Jessica took the picture back and continued walking. I willed my legs to move forward, even though my only thought was, 'I'm not ready for this'.
I was 17 already! There would be no better time than now.
