Doc Rebecca finally left the operating room at two o'clock in the morning. When Sarocha shot up to meet the vet halfway, her tired eyes showed it.
"How is he doing? Is he going to be fine? Right?" Sarocha could feel her eyes well up with tears again.
The young doctor quickly reached for the older woman's hand and gently squeezed it. "Sunny is stable. Don't worry. I've detoxed him from the poisonous substance, but he'll need to stay here until tomorrow so that I can closely monitor him.
Sarocha let out a sigh of relief. "That's... that's good." The woman returned to her chair, finally allowing exhaustion to take hold of her. "I want to thank you for saving him. I'm not sure what I'll do if..."
"Hey," the doctor said, taking the empty seat next to her, sensing the woman was about to have another breakdown. "You rushed him just in time. You also saved Sunny."
"But I was careless owner," Sarocha sobbed.
"It was an accident. Don't beat yourself up," the young doctor said, gently patting the older woman on the back. "Besides, Sunny's fine now. You'll just need to be more careful next time. He's still a puppy, so it's normal how exploratory he is. You have to train him to only ingest his dog food and treats."
Both women fell silent after that, as Doc Rebecca allowed her client to regain her composure. She gave her tissues to wipe away her tears and then went up to get a bottle of water. They maintained their comfortable silence until Sarocha asked if she could go see Sunny, to which the doctor agreed.
The veterinarian also let the older woman stay the rest of the night and watch her precious little puppy while she went back into her office. Doc Rebecca sat on her couch, intending to take a quick nap, but when she opened her eyes, it was already around seven in the morning.
She was startled awake by the faint thud of what she assumed was her door and the intoxicating aroma of coffee. Just then, she noticed a mug of brewed coffee on her table, with a yellow sticky note on it.
She took the note and smiled, feeling butterflies flutter in her stomach as she read:
Thank you for last night. I really appreciate it. I hope you don't mind me going through your pantry and making you coffee. Your assistant had already arrived, and Sunny was awake, so I went home. I'll be back later to fetch him. Anyway, I was wondering if you want to grab lunch with me? You have my number. Text me.
