Michael's POV

It had been over a week since I'd returned from London for my Bad tour, and I still hadn't called Cornelia like I promised. Every time I'd pick up the phone and glance at the small piece of paper she'd given me, nerves would seize me. The moment I'd gather enough courage, doubt would push it all away.

Why couldn't I just man up and call her? After all, she's just a person like me... albeit a very beautiful, poised, and—okay, maybe not just like me.

Today was no different. I sat in front of the phone, staring at her number for what felt like the hundredth time. Just as I reached to pick up the receiver, Randy, my younger brother, sidled up beside me, an amused look on his face.

"You've been glued to that phone for days, man. Call her already," he snickered, startling me slightly.

"I can't just call her, Randy. What if she's busy?" I countered.

"What if she isn't?" he shot back, eyebrow raised.

"What if she is?" I mumbled, feeling a bit defensive.

"What if she isn't?" he repeated, enjoying himself far too much.

"What if she—"

"Enough!" Janet's voice cut through our bickering as she strolled in, exasperated but smiling. "Both of you, shut up. Anyway, I dialed her number. It's ringing." With a sly grin, she tossed the phone in my direction.

My heart skipped a beat, and I fumbled to grab it. "Janet! Why would you do that?" I started, panicking, but then a familiar, elegant English accent floated through the line.

"Hello?" Cornelia's voice rang out clear, cutting through the air like a melody.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. "Hi, Cornelia, it's, uh... Michael," I stammered, trying to ignore the wide-eyed looks from Randy and Janet. Quickly, I turned off the speakerphone, ignoring their protests. Nosy schmucks.

"Michael... Michael who?" she asked, and I could practically hear the confusion on her end.

"Jackson," I laughed nervously, rubbing the back of my neck. "Michael Jackson."

"Oh! Hey, Michael. How've you been?" Her tone was warm, friendly.

"I've been good, actually," I replied, feeling my nerves melt away as her voice wrapped around me like a comforting blanket. "I'm on a little break right now, so I'm back in L.A. for two weeks before the tour resumes."

"Two weeks, huh?" she echoed, as if weighing each word.

"Yes, just two," I confirmed, grinning even though I knew she couldn't see me.

"Coincidentally, I'll be in L.A. tomorrow for some engagements," she said. "Maybe we could... see each other again?"

My heart leapt. She wanted to see me again. Before I could answer, I noticed Randy and Janet inching closer, clearly trying to eavesdrop. Rolling my eyes, I stood up and made my way up the spiral staircase to my room, shutting the door behind me and lying down on my bed.
