y/n pov:
it was a friday evening, and all i wanted to do was enjoy a good night's sleep. instead, i was rudely awoken by the sound of my ringtone. i blearily reached to answer it, glancing at the time - 2:00am. my lock screen was aglow, and upon seeing the caller name 'bff leighton 💕' i immediately picked up the phone. leighton's voice was slurred (she had clearly been out drinking), and i could hear loud music in the background of the call.
"y/n!! can you pleeeease pick me up? i'm a liiitle drunk," she remarked.
"of course, leight. i'll be there as soon as i can. whose house are you at?"
"bradleeeeys," she giggled.
sighing, i got up and quickly changed into an old hoodie of mine, grabbing an extra for leighton as she always gets cold. i slowly drove towards bradley's house, making sure to be careful and mentally preparing myself to hear every single detail of leighton's recent makeout. this wasn't abnormal for leighton, going out to parties to hook up with people and then showing back up at my dorm the next day to tell me all about it. i'd be lying if i said it didn't sting a little, even after all this time we'd been friends, but i'd accepted the fact that the love i held for leighton would never be reciprocated.

eventually, i pulled up at the frat house, seeing the many drunk teenagers sprawled out on the lawn. leighton was waiting for me on the sidewalk, her face splitting into a massive grin as soon as she spotted me.
"y/n!! i missed you so muuuch, you're so prettyyy," she slurred, twirling a lock of her hair in between her fingers. i could smell the alcohol on her lips as she got in the car, and my mind couldn't help but wander to what it would taste like to kiss her. shaking my head, i slowly pressed the gas pedal and began the drive back to my dorm.

a few minutes in, leighton began to shiver. remembering the hoodie i'd grabbed for her, i wordlessly handed it to her with a gentle smile that she sleepily reciprocated as she put on the hoodie. i blushed slightly looking at her in my clothes. even after all this time, just the sight of her made my heart flutter.

eventually we reached my dorm, and leighton grabbed my arm to stay upright as we made our way in. when we reached my room, i made my way to the dresser and grabbed her an oversized t-shirt and a pair of shorts for her to sleep in. we brushed our teeth and cozied into my bed. we laid down facing each other on respective sides of the bed and i felt my face heat up at the mere inches between us. i closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but after a few moments, i was interrupted by a voice piercing the silence.

"y/nnn," leighton slurred, "i'm coooold."
"leight, how can you be cold? you have, like, five blankets on top of you," i responded.
"i dunno, i just am. will you hold me?"

my brain stopped functioning when i heard those words. i flushed heavily and struggled trying to find an answer. "yeah, okay. c'mere."

leighton snuggled closer to me in the dark as i wrapped my arms around her. her head found a spot in the crook of my neck as our fronts pressed against each other. i breathed in her floral perfume; a scent i could never seem to forget. she nuzzled into my neck, and just when i thought she was finally asleep, she spoke again.

"y/n, i really love you."
"i love you too, leight."
"no, but like, i really love you. like, more than you love me. more than i'm supposed to."
"leighton, you're drunk."

i tried not to get my hopes up - i knew she was heavily intoxicated and probably wouldn't even remember this in the morning. however, i knew her words would ghost my mind forever.

"y/n, i mean it though. i've loved you for such a long time but i've been too scared to tell you because i know you don't feel the same way."
"leight, i promise you i love you more then you'll ever understand. how about this. if you really feel this way, tell me again in the morning and then we can talk."
"...okay. gnight."
"good night, leighton."

and just as i was about to fall asleep, she shifted her head upward and places a featherlight kiss on the side of my neck. i felt her hot breath on my skin as she whispered the words
"i love you."
