MIA
Even though every bone in my body rattles with apprehension, I still slam my signed contract down onto Michael's desk with apparent decisiveness.
"Mia?" Michael quirks a brow, his body flush with a designer suit. He must have a high-brow meeting today. "What's this?" He looks forward at the paper on the desk, not quite registering what I've just put in front of him.
"My acceptance," I say quickly, feigning confidence. "I accept the offer. I'd like to be the next Marketing Executive."
Michael's frown contorts into a beaming smile. "Great! I'm so pleased you accepted. I'll get HR on the transition, and we can discuss the move into your new role in due course."
I nod, all the while desperately begging my nerves to not explode with guilt: I haven't even told Danny yet. And I'm not sure how I'm going to do so. Needless to say, I can't leave it down to the internal communications providing him with that fact. That would be the ultimate slap in the face. No, I need to think of a more controlled way to do this.
At lunchtime, Hailey and I grab a quick-stop lunch at a local deli. Whilst I dig into my cream cheese bagel, Hailey fills me in on how her and Lucas are planning a getaway to Spain in the coming months. I wash down the thought of my brother and best friend in nothing but skimpy swimming suits together on the beach with a cold beer. Because, after this morning, I need it.
"I'm excited for the both of you," I part lie. "And I'm even more excited that Lucas will be out of the country." I laugh as I swallow down the last of my bagel. Hailey gives me a sarcastic grin.
"Anyway," she starts, throwing some cash out for the bill before I put in my half. "At least you'll get the house to yourself so you and Grayson can, you know..." she trails off at the same time her eyebrows wiggle.
I laugh. "You do know I can go to Grayson's apartment when I like?"
"True. Let's go. I have a lecture."
I nod and follow my best friend out of the building. Hailey trails off to the tube station and I round the corner back to Saint and City. Before I can make it much further than that, I walk straight bang into a solid chest. When I look up, I can't place the somewhat familiar face.
"Hey Mia," the tall, attractive man says. "Nice to see you again."
I nod, pretending that I'm not completely out of the picture here, but my memory is evading me. "Nice to uh, see you again too."
