Chapter 5
Amaya walked over to the chair in her room and sat heavily down. The letter was still clutched in her hand and she kept reading over the name, hoping that it would change, but of course it didn't.
Amaya knew she wouldn't be able to kill Quinn, but she also knew she couldn't go against the King's orders. She didn't know what to do. How was she to get out of this situation? Quinn had become her friend during the week and a half Amaya had been staying here. They ate almost every meal together since neither of them knew anybody else, nor did Amaya care to talk to other people. Amaya spent most of her days talking with Quinn. She had grown close to her during her stay and Amaya couldn't kill her. She didn't have the heart for it.
If Amaya didn't kill Quinn then her loved ones would be hurt by the King. To make it this long without putting them in danger just to throw all of that away for this girl she had only known for a week seemed stupid. She wouldn't allow herself to do that either.
There had to be a way to get around his orders. If Amaya somehow got Quinn to leave then she wouldn't be responsible. Quinn would then be a problem for later as long as Amaya was able to get her to leave now.
With that in mind Amaya started a fire in the fireplace and threw in the letter, watching it burn in the flickering flames. There could be no evidence that would link Amaya to the murders and kidnappings that would come. When it was reduced to ashes, Amaya pulled off her slippers and headed towards the window.
Amaya knew that King Roland had spies in the palace. She could feel them watching her, but every time she tried to pinpoint who it was they would disappear. She knew that they would report all of her movements to the King. She couldn't allow them to know that she was going to visit Quinn's room. If they did, the King would suspect what she was about to do.
It was still dark outside and she hoped that if she climbed to walls to Quinn's room then no one would see her. As of right now no one was on the palace grounds.
Amaya swung open the glass panes and hitched up her skirt. She stuck one leg out, and then another, getting a foothold. Her upper body followed and soon she was clinging to the stone of the castle wall. She was three stories up and knew the fall could very well be deadly if she landed the wrong way. At best she would get away with a broken leg or two.
Amaya wasn't afraid of falling though. She had plenty of practice scaling walls in her lifetime that it barely fazed her. Amaya slowly began inching across the wall towards Quinn's rooms, which were about twelve or so windows to her left. So it wasn't that far. Amaya was just glad that she didn't have to go down a floor.
It took her about five minutes to make it to Quinn's room and when Amaya pressed her face against the glass she saw Quinn sleeping peacefully in her bed. Amaya tapped on it loudly to get her to wake up.
After about five raps on the pane Quinn groggily rose from her bed as she tried to figure out where the sound came from. Amaya knocked again and Quinn finally turned towards the window to find Amaya precariously crouched outside it.
Quinn ran over and threw the window open and helped Amaya into her room.
"Are you completely crazy?" Quinn shouted, shock etched on her face. "What were you doing outside my window? And why aren't you wearing any shoes?"
