"Stop hogging all the gummy bears!" Cal whines. I'm laughing so hard I feel tears begin to flow. She glowers at me. Even sitting down I have a major height advantage. She's straddling me and stretching desperate for her gummies. Cal has had an obsession with the things since she was nine maybe even before that.
"Nick, I'm giving you one more chance to surrender my gummies or-"
"Or what?" I challenge her. Her eyes darken. She speaks calmly.
"Or you're going to pay." My eyes widen as she wiggles her fingers in the air. The thing is I'm impossibly ticklish and she knows exactly where to attack.
I put on my best poker face.
"Try me." She lifts an eyebrow.
"One...two..." She drags two out warning me with her tone. On three she pounces on me and I'm instantly a giggling mess on the ground.
"I told you! Now you're gonna get it!" She's got me pinned and I'm blinded by her mess of curls. Her fingers have gone to work at my rib cage. I'll admit I'm squealing like a little girl.
"What the hell is going on here!" I freeze and I feel Cal do the same above me. We look up to see a scowling Stacy.
I groan as I take a long look at this compromising position. Cal's small frame is draped all over me and her hands are all over my abs. I flinch when I see her face is inches from mine.
"Shit!" I mutter under my breath. Cal and I share a look of panic. We both know where this night is headed...right down the drain.
"Stacy! Hey you're back." Cal tries a little too enthusiastically. I see my girlfriend sneer at her attempt.
She rips her piercing glare from her to me.
"We need to talk. Now!" I jump to my feet and follow her to the kitchen. I look back once to see Cal silently doubled over in hysterics. I don't reach the threshold of the kitchen and Stacy is already ripping into me.
"Nick are you kidding me?! You tell everyone she's just your friend but the second I leave you're all over each other!"
"Come on baby it's not like that." I say attempting to soothe her.
"It's never like that!" She spats stepping away from me.
"Don't you trust me?"
"I don't trust her!" She glares straight through the wall where Cal was still presumably still sitting in my living room. I shake my head. "Can't you see she's crazy about you?!"
"No way babe. Cal and I go way back. She's my best friend." I pull her to me by the waist. "You're my girlfriend. It's that simple." She slumps her shoulders.
"I know. I'm sorry. It's just...she's so pretty and you two are just so great together." I nod. She's very right. Cali is very pretty. She puts models to shame. But I fail to see what her beauty has to do with my relationship with Stacy.
"Stacy I'm with you and I really like you. How can I get you to see that?" She nods and I can tell she's thinking.
"Can we spend tonight...alone. I know we were all supposed to hangout together but maybe we need some alone time?"
I shake my head. "I can't just kick her out..."
"She's a big girl nick." Stacy glares at me impatiently. Suddenly I'm irritated because I know this is some stupid test of loyalty.
"Sorry Stacy, I'm not kicking Cal out." I turn to the pantry and grab some popcorn and another package of gummy bears.
I place the popcorn in the microwave. I watch Stacy zero in on the gummies in my hand. She quickly turns red.
"Fine! I'll leave!" She stamps her foot and storms out.
"Stacy wait..." I follow her out the door.
"No! Have a great time with Cali!" She goes up an octave for Cal's benefit. She detests when people call her Cali she claims its so cliche. "I don't care! I hope you choke on a gummy fucking bear you asshole!"
And as she storms to her car and speeds away I'm pretty sure we just broke up.
I return to the living room and stand awkwardly and shove my hands in my pockets. Cal eyes me cautiously.
"You guys got into another fight." She doesn't ask me. She begins fiddling with the carpet and is avoiding eye contact. I know if she looks up her face will be ridden with guilt and that frustrates me. She isn't guilty and neither am I. Cal huffs. "Spill it Nick."
I shake my head. I don't want Cal to carry the weight of tonight. I don't want her to feel like Stacy leaving is her fault. It really isn't. Cal isn't responsible for Stacy's insecurities. Cal is glaring at me waiting for an explanation. Then her face softens as if she's had a sudden realization.
"Nick she had to know that what she saw...wasn't what it looked like. I mean we were just fooling around."
"I know right!" I exhale knowing that Cal doesn't feel guilty. I go to the kitchen and return with popcorn, soda, and gummy bears. I plop down next to Cal on a mountain of blankets on the floor. We start The Outsiders and it's like any other Friday night. We always watch movies that are based on books we are reading in class. We are real slackers but half way into the movie Cal confesses to having read the book. I give her a look of mock betrayal.
"We had a deal." I scold her.
"I'm sorry!" She holds her hands up in defense. "But it's such a good book. I cried when Johnny...oops never mind just keep watching."
We resume the movie but my lids get heavy as Ponyboy storms out of his home.
