Gwendolyn hurried to Avenport's Fourton Hospital in her secondhand Fiat. It was ten o'clock at night.
She quickly parked her car in front of the hospital entrance, ignoring the security guard's warnings.
Gwendolyn lifted her daughter from the front passenger seat and rushed into the hospital.
The security guard couldn't stop her from entering, and he barked, "Just wait till I clamp your car. Let's see what you'll do then!"Barefoot and still dressed in her pajamas, Gwendolyn couldn't think straight. She could hardly hear anything, her mind consumed by worry. Despite this, she ran to the emergency department with her daughter in her arms, her entire body shaking with anxiety.
"Doctor, please, you have to save my daughter. Her temperature is so high that she's having seizures!" Gwendolyn pleaded tearfully.
A doctor swiftly took the child from her arms and reassured her, "You can wait outside. We'll treat her immediately."The a nurse led Gwendolyn out of the emergency room and instructed, "You need to make the payment first. Here's the receipt. Your daughter will need to be admitted for observation, possibly in the ICU."
Gwendolyn nodded repeatedly and implored, "Okay. Please, save my daughter."
Juliette couldn't be sick. What if the fever damages her brain? Gwendolyn couldn't bear to entertain the thought of the worst-case scenario.
With tears clouding her vision, she walked towards the cashier's desk.Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from the hospital entrance. A group of men in suits entered the hospital, led by the tallest among them.
The towering man wore a perfectly pressed black coat, enhancing his imposing and aloof aura. With sharp features and piercing black eyes, he exuded a mysterious presence. Tightening his lips, he radiated a commanding and unapproachable air.Bystanders instinctively moved back to make way for him as he strode through the hospital.
Unaware of his looming presence, Gwendolyn hurried towards the cashier. In a moment of distraction, they collided, causing Gwendolyn to teeter and lose her balance. With a slight frown, the man extended a long arm, wrapping it around her slender waist to prevent her from falling.
Their eyes met, and Gwendolyn shivered involuntarily, taken aback by the icy expression in his gaze.Despite the deep winter chill, Gwendolyn found herself shivering under his gaze. What could be causing this reaction? Was he made of pure ice?
Patrick Lowen steadied Gwendolyn on her feet and coolly stated, "Please watch your step, miss."
Gwendolyn stood frozen in shock as Patrick entered the elevator. Collecting her wits, she turned around and shouted,"Watch your own step, mister," Gwendolyn retorted.
He was the one who bumped into her. What a domineering man!
Patrick heard her as the elevator doors started to close. He turned his gaze back to her, noticing her bare feet red from frostbite. His eyes traveled upwards, taking in her old-fashioned pajamas, swollen eyes streaked with tears, and messy hair.
Before he could say anything, the elevator doors shut, cutting short his observation.Patrick rode the elevator up to the VIP ward on the tenth floor of the hospital. His grandfather, Hector Lowen, had been in a coma for six long years. Despite Patrick's efforts in hiring the best doctors over the years, there had been no success in bringing Hector out of his comatose state.
However, last night, a breakthrough had occurred, and Hector had regained consciousness. Patrick hurried to the hospital as soon as he received the news.
Standing at the entrance to Hector's ward was a man in a white coat. The tall and slim figure was none other than Patrick's good friend, Kevin Chavez.Kevin informed his friend, "Old Mr. Lowen is really awake, Patrick. He wants to see you."
Patrick nodded in gratitude and replied, "Thank you for your help."
He opened the door to the ward and entered. Hector lay in the bed, connected to various tubes. As Hector recognized his visitor, he weakly raised his hand in a wave.
Patrick hurried to his grandfather's bedside, clasping his hand.
"Grandpa, you're finally awake."Hector let go of Patrick's hand and pointed at his own mouth, indicating he had something to say. Patrick leaned in, bringing his ear close to his grandfather's mouth.
Hector whispered, "M-Marry the eldest daughter of the Ashton family."
