It all started on the thirteenth of October. Elija and I were called to investigate a paranormal occurrence. We're called often to investigate, but most of the time we don't catch any evidence on our equipment. The people who call us are in a state of paranoia, most of the time it's a simple explanation of a broken pipe or a creaky floorboard.  Overly anxious residents of an older building tend to jump to the conclusion that it is caused by something otherworldly, when in all reality they just need a plumber.

I've been doing paranormal investigations professionally since I was twenty years old, but I've been investigating since about the third grade. Elija and I met about a year ago and we have been inseparable. To be quite honest I'm relieved to have a partner. Elija was a great partner in work, don't get me wrong, but he was the more irrational one of the two of us. I investigate the paranormal because I believe strongly, and I want to learn more. Elija on the other hand you could consider a skeptic. The whole reason he took up this paranormal gig was because he wants to prove to me wrong.

The case Elija and I were given seemed pretty reliable. The case was presented to us formally by the head of the police department himself. His name was Burt Avalon and along with his wife, Emily, they had been experiencing said activity. I talked to them on the phone briefly about the situation; all of the information that was given to was that they thought something, or someone was haunting them. They did not comment on whether it felt like a positive or negative presence, but they did explain to me that their daughter, Evelyn, had died a few weeks earlier. Although, it's a possibility they are just grieving I want to help them as much as I can.

Elija and I were sitting on the subway train on our way to investigate. I must confess, it was an extended journey, and affording two plane tickets was beyond our means. To pass the time I was researching more about the Avalon's family house, skimming through articles and newspapers. I bopped my head rhythmically to the music in my ear buds as I read. I feel a tug on one of my earbuds and turned to look at Elijah.

"Did you need something?" I asked, studying his face. He had soft brown hair that delicately hung over his forehead, some stray curls sticking up. Elijah's eyes were of a caramel brown hue, gleaming golden when caught in the right light. His build was lean, not a lot of muscle. He wore a band tee and baggy pants. His appearance seemed disheveled, which makes sense because it's been such a long ride.

"You ready for some ghost hunting?" Elija smiled sheepishly back at me, his eyes twinkling.

I looked out the train window and saw a big, brown, two-story house come into view. It's ironic that it was placed right in front of the subway, almost like it was inviting us to come in.

As we stepped out of the train with our luggage, my gut started to hurt. I had an ominous feeling regarding this investigation, but I brushed that feeling off and stepped inside the house. That moment was the biggest regret I've ever had in my entire life.
