As I stepped into the creaky old house, I took in my surroundings. Although, the outside looked rough, the inside was very clean. The house itself was two stories and had multiple bedrooms; it was obvious the Avalon family was loaded. Their lighting was dim and there was something eerie about the mudroom we had stepped into. The house had a door to go into the entrance, and then a second door for the rest of the house. It was almost as if you were given another chance to turn around and go back. I really should have noticed that before pushing through that dark oak door.
Elijah followed me, his gaze fixed intently on his phone. I turned back to glance at what he was looking at so seriously and saw multiple long messages. I turned my body completely to make eye contact. "Is it your mom again," I asked, noticing his frustrated perplexion.
"Yes, I'm fine," he replied with a gentle tone. His gaze softened at my concerned expression. Elijah showed great care for me, which was clearly evident. I appreciated it; having someone who cared was quite comforting. My affection for him was mutual. Maybe I even did a little more than just care for him.
I smiled warmly at him in attempt to ease the mood. Elija has been through a lot, and I understood that he didn't want to talk about any more of what was going on. I had a hunch anyways. His mom has always been nagging at him to grow up and do something for once. I can only imagine what kind of discerning messages she sent this time.
We walked through the door I had been holding open for quite some time. Across the way was another door and we were standing in the main hallway. I have to admit there was an eerie feeling to this all. The house was dimly lit, and the wallpaper on the walls were peeling off. As I glanced around the perimeter, something down the hall caught my eye. Right by the staircase a small shadow figure of a girl stood. I've experienced apparitions before, but never like this. Her eyes were glowing red, and her presence gave off mixed emotions. The strongest emotion was fear. Just as I was a about to point it out to Elija she was gone. She disappeared just as quickly as she appeared.
The way she appeared was not horrifying but simply confusing. Her presence only brought fear to me because it was unexpected, and she appeared nothing like I've seen before. The girl's eyes were so bright, I could hardly see the rest of her face. She had no color other than the ruby red glow in her eyes. It spooked me, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued. I felt a tug on the hem of my t-shirt.
"Monica," Elija called, turning towards him. "You good?"
I gave Elijah a gentle smile; he had enough on his plate already. He already had to deal with his mom. The last thing Elija needed was to worry about an apparition. If I see it again of course I'll tell him. I simply nodded and replied, "Yeah I was just looking around."
