"What is this for?" I questioned eyeing the red cloth being tied around my bicep.
"Your team color" was all the argan guard said.
With that he moved over to Adalyn who stood beside me, fastening another cloth around her bicep as well. I wonder what this team thing is about.
They had slightly dressed us up-mostly, Adalyn-a woman argan had come in and made my hair more presentable and had me switch my t-shirt out for a loose muscle shirt of sorts, as well as a new belt. Then she spent a while braiding Adalyn's hair into a half up half down style, a red ribbon was included throughout this braid and had her take the flannel off, so she only had the tank top on.
I don't know why we had to wear things with no sleeves, maybe it's hot today?
"Follow me" the guard grumbled.
We both followed him all the way out to the hovering car which was once again out in front of the door leading outside. Scooting inside the guard slammed the door shut on Adalyn and I, leaving us to sit and wait for the long drive to wherever this thing was being held.
I don't know why they have been so determined to keep this event as much a mystery as possible. The only thing we know is that most of the citizens and guards will be there and we are racing each other in it.As we drew closer and closer to the mystery event, I grew more anxious.
Looking over at Adalyn sat near the opposite window as me, she too was looking out the window, thoughts clearly running their own race in her head. It's been getting easier to tell when her mind is working overtime, her hands would mindlessly pick at her nails.
The hovering car slowed approaching an area of the endless desert landscape where there were three buildings where many argans were gathering, waiting in long lines seeming to get tickets or something checked. We continued past them driving around a building revealing it to be a stand of seating similar to that of bleachers.
I noticed all the dealeas which were leisurely ambling around in a large pen beside a straight fenced in track which went from the first set of bleachers to the fifth one Which I just now noticed. Whatever idea my mind was composing in my head, this was not where I thought this supposedly big event would be held.
The hovering car came to a sudden halt right next to a small area covered by a canopy where there were somewhere around twelve groups of two argan citizens all getting something painted on themselves.
The moment me and Adalyn were ushered out of the vehicle all the argan looked at us in question.
"They are joining in on the race" the guard who had driven us here sounded much more enthusiastic now speaking to the others. Adalyn was as stiff as a board. So was I.
The argans under the canopy smiled at us, seeming to like this news, one of them spoke.
"We appreciate your effort in respecting our tradition" an argan woman who was painting another spoke nodding in our direction.
"Thank you being so welcome" Adalyn spoke with unexpected smoothness. She seemed to catch onto the tone of these citizens quickly.
A moment later the guard led us to the back of the canopied area where an argan woman was sitting on a stool opening paint jars-do they call themselves women or something else?
"Hello! My name's Lyra" she stood sticking a hand out.
"Hello" I shook her hand "I'm Caleb."
She returned my polite smile before switching over to Adalyn who stood slightly behind me now.
