As the sun set over the vibrant streets of Harlem, 18-year-old Whitney, stood in front of her mirror, that's decorated top to bottom with ribbons from her pageant days and her childhood friends, she applies her signature deep red lipstick and tease her head full of curls and set it with hairspray."Nippy! Simone is coming, you better be ready, young lady!" Her mother shouted, a sigh escaped from her lips with a slight eye roll, "I'm coming, ma!" She blared back as she stuffed her cosmetics in her bags as she fluffed her hair and changed her clothes.
Her room adorned with posters of influential black figures and the sound of Natalie Cole filled the room and her sweet perfume swirled in the air. Whitney was dressed in her stylish ensemble that excluded confidence and sophistication, her white baby button-up blouse, light pink pencil skirt along with a pink fuzzy blazer topped with a brooch, black translucent dotted stockings, black kitten heels, and a white breton hat with bow on the side.
She grabs a bag with her butler, 'Andy,' before running down the stairs and into her father's arms, "Oh, my little princess is going to college!" She spins around as he gives her a hug, "I'm so excited!" he exclaims. In a few years, you'll see me on billboards, magazines, and even on the cover of Vogue-- as the new and improved Dorthy Dandridge." Her mind races, picturing all the sweet rewards she will receive after achieving her dreams of becoming a star.
"Yeah, right." Her mother scoffs. "The only suitable job you need to have is being a nurse, teacher, or something that's more sensible." Whitney shakes her head and sighs, "That is a sensible job for me." She tells her mother, who was preparing her hourly tea, "Nippy, I already said what I have to say, but I am proud of you for making it to college and I want you to be more realistic with your choices. The world is not full of sunshine and rainbows that we painted out to be, no matter how much we spoil you," stated her mother, who's stirring her tea with her antique silver tea spoon. She looked up at her daughter and saw she's slightly irritated. She pulls her over to her side and plants a kiss on her temple before hearing a blaring honking noise outside their driveway. Andy peeps out the window and sees an electric blue Cadillac with an ecstatic girl hopping out of the car with her baggy street clothes and mildly dirty sneakers. "Mrs. Houston, we might have a problem," he announced before hearing the doorbell ringing repeatedly. He opens the door to only be knocked down by the excited teen. "Nippy!" she screeched as she ran to her friend with open arms as Whitney, "Ah, Simone!" she cried out before embracing tightly. The two girls jolted around and did their special handshake that her father found amusing and her mother to be annoying as she huffed and rolled her eyes.
"Oh, my goodness, you look so good!" Whitney complimented her friend, taken aback, she says, "Uh, no miss thing-- you look good, over here lookin' like you gon' run for president." She examined her friend as she made simple poses, "Why, thank you very much." As the two turned their attention to Whitney's parents, Cissy's eyes sent daggers into Whitney's soul. The awkward tension was so bad that Simone decided to step in, "You know what, I'll just go ahead and help Andy with the bags. I'll wait for you in the car." She said as she took two of her bags and carried them outside, along with Andy carrying more to the car.
