addie
Hayes and I ended up at the small diner one Wednesday night for date night. Both just getting out of our practices, we decide to grab something to eat before heading to each of our houses.
"How has cheer been?" Hayes asked, stuffing his face with a few fries.
I giggled before replying, "I really love it. Everyone's so nice. Football?" he answered with his usual, 'It's hard on somedays, but in the end, it's my life.'
Hayes seemed to want to ask me a question, when he got cut off by someone coming up beside him and tackled him in a hug. I looked over and laughed to see Toby, the linebacker on the football team, with his girlfriend Madison.
"Hey!" I smiled and stood up to give her a quick hug. She accepted, squeezing me tightly before sitting next to me, Toby still next to Hayes as they talked.
"How's cheer been?! I've seen y'all practice and girl, you're on fire." I laughed at her remark and told her about what we have been doing in the simple world of school cheerleading. All of us laughed and talked for what seemed like hours, my feet set up lazily on Hayes' lap from across from me.
We took the usual group picture and selfies while laughing at funny ones we would take together. It seemed pretty perfect.
That was until yet another person came up behind, but this time being unwelcome.
"Well, well, well isn't it pretty boy Grier and his little linebacker." a deep voice sounded from behind Madison and I.
Hayes' face instantly hardened, making me wonder who was behind me, yet I dared to turn and look. Madison grabbed my arm and squeezed, signaling me to look at her. I followed her gaze to her lap. It was opened on her notes, one word illuminated on the screen.
Derek. The king of douchebags. The second-hand guy of Hayes' old "friends".
My eyes widened and I snapped my head to meet Hayes' gaze. The look in my eyes told him to not do anything he'll regret, his face seemed to calm the slightest bit.
"What do you want?" Toby's intimidating voice showed as his question was towards Derek.
"Just popped in to grab a burger then saw you dorks here."
"You can leave you low life piece of shit. We don't want you here." Hayes' voice was strung with anger as he talked to him. I was surprised at his choice of words, but decided not to say anything.
Derek, being the wuss he is, simply rolled his eyes and walked out with his burger in hand. The breath I didn't know I was holding was let out as I leaned over and squeezed Hayes' hand.
"Let's go." I whispered, trying to calm him down.
All of us bid our goodbyes as we got into our separate cars. Hayes' Jeep was still off as we sat in silence, giving Hayes the time to cool off.
"He had no reason to be here-" "You don't own the place, Hayes."
"That doesn't matter! He shouldn't have approached us in the first place."
"Hey, it's done and over with-" "That doesn't matter, he shouldn't have come up to us in the first place, Addie. You don't understand anything." his remark offended me, my guard immediately going up.
"Whatever, just take me home." I rolled my eyes, starting to get annoyed with his grudge holding. My head sat on my hand, looking out the window.
"Addie, baby..." "Take me home, now."
He complied, turning on the car. You could cut the tension with the dullest pair of scissors it was so tense in the car. I didn't even realize we were in my driveway until Hayes sighed, turning his car off.
About to get out of the car, Hayes saw my actions and locked the car. I rolled my eyes, already annoyed with him.
"Hayes, seriously? Unlock the car." I dead panned, looking over at him. His eyes were sad, making me already on the edge of breaking.
"Baby, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that." he pleaded taking my hand.
"That doesn't matter, you didn't have to be so rude about it." I quietly said. "I know, and I'm sorry."
His hand came up to my chin, lightly tugging for my to look at him. My blue eyes looked up into his, grinning a bit at the face he pulled. The hand that was under my chin found its way to my cheek, him slowly leaning in for a kiss.
Not really wanting to be teased any longer, both of my hands found their way to his neck, closing the rest of the space between us. It lasted for a few seconds before he smiled, resting our foreheads against each other.
"I was hoping you would do that." he winked. My laugh trailed through the air in the car, pushing his chest.
"You're a freak." "I'm your freak." "Why are we so nauseatingly cheesy?" "I don't know, but I love it." he kissed my one last time.
"I love you." I smiled, about to get out of the car. His hand caught mine, pulling me back in the car, kissing me once more, mumbling an 'I love you' against my lips.
"Had to add more cheese my love." he winked.
I shook my head at my crazy boyfriend, walking up to my front door. Waving once more, I turned back to the door, unlocking it with the key on my keychain.
My mother sat on the couch, a bowl of popcorn in hand. Right as I was about to go and sit down with her right as Daniel walked over and sat down. Rethinking my decision, I said a quick hello to my mother before descending up the stairs and into my humble abode.
Taking a quick shower and texting Hayes to see if he made it home alright, I was finally laying in bed with my overly comfortable pajamas on, reruns of Law and Order illuminated my television.
Three and a half episodes later, I was in a wasteland of my dreams.
