The rain met the earth like a kiss on the cheek. The pavement darkened as B stood under the shade, weighing his options. He could either make a mad dash for the parking lot where his mom may or may not be .Or he could get comfortable under the purple canopy and rest his feet
It was five minutes later that B would be discovered, shoes discarded and form slumped sleepily into the station by fellow classmates. Four or five girls that paid no mind to him, but then from the throng, he caught a flash of silver through squinted sight.
It was daylight intensified by the frames of glasses.
It was Dan.
All dark coils and luminous coal-like eyes, he wore a dark blue hoodie and a toppling cinnamon roll hat.Throughout the day mere proximity had made him aware of plans the group had on staying late to take a PE exam they'd missed.
Dan halted and surveyed the now very self-conscious B.
'Are your parents coming soon?'
'Maybe.'
'Umm, are you good by yourself?'
'Yes, I'm most often like this.'
There was something deflating about the affected Dan.It was as if the hat slumped deeper and the little lights the boy carried in his eyes grew muted.
'Hey Dan, you coming?' called one of his companions. The group had ventured half a block ahead before noting his absence and now they aptly waited for a reply. B could swear a shroud of whispering formed and dissipated between them.
'I'm gonna walk my friend home'.
'My home is seventeen blocks away'.
'Oh'
'You don't have to' B said, hastily gathering his possessions and trying to stand up.
Then blared a honk, Dan gave a little start (a cute one). The window rolled down and revealed was the bald head of B's uncle. He was submerged in an artificial arctic and lyrics of an old-fashioned burmese song drifted through the window.
'That's my ride'
'Wait, let me deliver you to the car at least'. Dan hastened to B's side, lightly hovering his umbrella's translucent interior over their heads.B followed Dan's lead. They were close, a breath apart. The air was cool and their shoes softly sloshed in half-formed puddles.Summer could be smelt, even with the hurdles of exams and revisions to be surpassed, it coquettishly greeted them through a warmth threaded in frigid sweeps and then, the relentless sunlight that washed over the pair.
It had come from nowhere as if massive thunderheads had been shoved aside. Now in the glint of gold, Dan looked burnished, more picture than person. B's breath hitched. He felt Dan's particular beauty so intensely as if he'd been exposed to the sun itself.
The moment was perfect, to hold fast would be to achieve heaven.
