Her dance with Alex had stalked her dreams. Every night since the ball would Alex make an appearance. Offering her his hand, spinning her in the air, holding her in his arms. He would hold his hand out, each night wearing a different coloured suit, each as flattering as the last, and she would take the hand offered out to her. They would dance not as rivals, but as the teenagers they are. Nu would only dream of him, never see him.
That was until he was outside her door.
It had been late. Extremely late. Her handmaiden had knocked on her bedroom door, stuck her head in and said gently and sweetly, "There is a high-status guest at the door. They hold many security risks but the terms of their arrival are undecided. What would you like me to do?"
A high-status guest? Please. Be realistic. The only high-status guest knocking at the door at this hour would be her father, drunk and delirious.
Nu dragged herself of bed hair tied in a plait down her back, stepping into a pair of slippers. She was still half asleep when she pulled open the side door. It was traditional for those close to the palace to enter through the side palace and all others would use the front door, a grandeur entrance tailing them.
The brass doorknob had been cold to touch, shooting chills up her arms. The door had opened with a creak and as soon as she saw the figure stood there, her heart stopped.
They held onto the doorframe like it was a life support. The person was ragged and even looked slightly feral as they looked down at her. What once must have been one of the highest quality suits, now hung off their body in rags. Their pale skin sported a collection of bruise. Golden hair, the colour of wheat fields, was stained with dirt and matted with what looked like... blood.
They stood in the shadows concealed and hidden. Dark green eyes found hers. Their eyes were downcast and looked empty, all strength that may have been behind them snuffed out.
Her throat was dry, and her voice came out high and broken.
"Alex?"
