The day was dragging on much longer than you wanted it to. You were already twitchy from your morning constitutional being rudely interrupted and cut short-- but now, so was your work. Against your wishes, a particular voice stood out among the crowd of customers coming and going, catching your attention every time he spoke. It almost felt like he was doing it on purpose. You would always find yourself looking up for the source of the voice despite yourself, and it wasn't long before Valance caught on and began to say things at random just to get your attention. You were growing frustrated from not being able to focus on your job.
Unfortunately for you, Valance was eating up your attention like a starved animal.
At some point, keeping his distance became too much for the odd man, and he began trailing his carts closer to you, speaking more directly to you no matter where he went, if only to hear your responses. The closer he got, the more he initiated eye contact-- something that really shook you to the bone-- and took every opportunity to turn your socially awkward fluster into flirting.
You only managed to shake him off for your fifteen-minute break. You usually held those off until the end of your shift, having too much fun zoning out to even remember you were supposed to; today, however, you desperately needed it. It was the most blissful fifteen minutes you'd had all day, too! It wasn't easy sneaking out without Valance noticed, but luckily for you, he had been out on the floor when you took the maintenance tunnel to the other side of the store. Fifteen minutes of peace and quiet were spent lounging on a picnic table in your store's side-yard, another five minutes crawling by as you prolonged your journey back to your department.
When you got back, you were almost literally tackled by the man himself-- pouting and whining at you like a dog, as if you'd abandoned him in some back alley somewhere.
"(Y/n)!!" he cried your name, gripping your shoulders and holding you close. You cringed, trying to fight back the flustered blush sweeping across your cheeks at the sudden contact. "Where'd you go!"
"Break? Duh," you muttered, pushing the man off of you. He pouted and continued to hover over your shoulder, following you back out onto the sale floor. "You should have told me! We could have gone together!" he chirped. You choked back a retort, your fingers clenching tighter around your clipboard and pen. You pointedly ignored the strange man, allowing your eyes to sweep the floor instead, in search of things you needed.
A quick list of products was drawn up on your paper, with varying numbers of stars drawn next to the abbreviations you'd devised, to determine the level of importance. It was a simple, yet effective, tactic you'd taken to ever since you first started this job. List in hand, you whipped around your heel, only faltering for a moment as you almost bumped into the broad chest of your 'companion'. But just like before, you twisted your body to push past him, and returned to the task at hand as if nothing had happened.
Valance was talking to you, you could hear and feel the rumble of his voice in your ribcage, but you tuned it out entirely as you went over the list in your hand. Stalking into the backroom, you paused when the smell of cleaning chemicals hit your nose. Your eyes swam about the room, taking in the freshly-mopped floor and the dishes lined up by the sinks. The doors to the freezer were cracked open, held in place by a hose you held a love-hate relationship with. You made a face, wanting to make some snide remark at the hose, but the thought was quickly brushed aside when sweet little Abe's face popped up in one of the freezer door windows.
Abe wasn't much of a talker, which was what made you two such a great closing duo. All you needed to do was share a brief look, and you already knew what the other wanted. Which was why your heart sank when you saw the stress in his sweet chocolatey orbs, flicking over your shoulder to the pest that continued to fight for your attention, and back to you. Immediately, you felt bad for leaving him with this guy in favor of avoiding him yourself. Pressing his lips tightly, Abe returned to mopping the freezer floor, and you quietly stepped back out of the room to leave him to it. If Valance was going to hover over your shoulder, you would gladly keep him away from Abe while the poor introvert busied himself in silence.
