It all started with detention.

Let me rewind. Me. Detention?

I forgot. You are not familiar with me. But my parents, but the few friends I had, yes, had, all know me as a serious, discipled individual. I have never been late for anything, let alone have the desire to break rules that would land me in detention. I was proud of my ability to know where the line is and to keep to my own promise of never crossing it. But my all friends all thought that made me boring, apparently. The rest is history. Which I will reveal if you stick around for long enough. Or not. I'm a regular rule breaker now.

Anyway, I started going to detention because underneath all the stiffness of mine is a very soft individual. So soft that the first thing I thought of after running away from my friends after they all collectively said I was boring to my face, was "I can hide from them in detention." I didn't even think of joining a club after school. Ahmed and Courtney had clubs after school. They would see me when club was over. And I couldn't go home immediately either, because half of my old friend group were my next door neighbors, and they had a habit of hanging out near my house after they dumped their respective bags at home.

So here I was, purposely withholding my homework from Mr. White, my Science teacher. He was coincidentally my least favorite teacher, and I his. Like an angel, he told me to stay after class, only to say that he banishes me to the detention room along with Maria da Silva, the class trouble maker.

'I can't believe there's a day I'll see you in detention,' Maria made small talk as we walked down the stairs. The science room was on the third floor and the designated detention room was on the first floor.

I grimaced. Maria was chewing gum while talking, which made her words grossly mispronounced. She also smelled like cheese.

'Don't talk while you're chewing gum. Also, don't stand so close to me.'

Maria's eyebrows flew to her forehead as I said that.

'Rude,' she smirked and purposely bumped into me, spreading the cheese particles on my pristine uniform.

I squawked in disgust and took off the rest of the stairs. I had to get away from her. Behind me, Maria laughed like demented witch. At least I didn't hear her speeding up.

When I arrived, the detention room was sparsely populated. Nonetheless, the kids here looked like trouble. Every one stared at me as I took a seat at the front. Bad idea, since the front was completely empty. This gave Maria, who came in, the idea that she should choose the seat right next to me.

'Can you sit elsewhere?' I whispered to her as soon as she placed her bag on the chair. Despite the distance between us, I could already detect a hint of cheese.

Maria pretended to look around the mostly deserted classroom. She turned to me and pursed her lips. 'Sorry. No can do. This is like, my usual seat.'

Her expression was so genuine I thought she was speaking the truth.

Then, a very old teacher came in and swept her beady eyes over room. Finally, they landed on Maria.

'Oh, I see you have decided to stop hiding from me at the back, Maria,' she joked in her old ladies voice.

I stared at Maria, feeling disgust coating my skin. Is she stalking me? I know she is called a trouble maker for a reason, but before today, we never talked. In fact, no one except for the teachers talk to Maria, ever. The entire class had decided to avoid her unless we were split into groups for assignments. As a result, she got our attention by asking the teacher outrageously irrelevant questions and playing with her stationaries so loudly it disrupt the lesson. I don't hate Maria, but I do not like her.
