"Do you want to come with a group of us down to the lake?" Gage asked, standing in my doorway.

I pulled my white comforter over my head as I let out a silent groan. Gage had been my wake up call this morning, coming in a bit too early for my liking.

"Are you inviting me because you're still convinced I'm going to tell mom and dad about your secret?" I asked, with slight teasing in my tone but also a bit of curiosity.

Gage rolled his eyes at my comment as he crossed his arms over his chest after hearing my words.

"No." he stated. "Maybe a little." he corrected himself.

"Your secret is safe with me, I told you." I said, as I got out of bed and walked over to the my vanity and began to brush out the knots that were in my hair from sleeping.

"Thank you." Gage said. "Do you still want to come? I think you're old enough now to handle it." he teased as I could see him laughing at his joke in the mirror of my vanity.

"I guess so." I responded, after pretending to think about the offer for a minute. I had always wanted to go down to the lake, but Gage never invited me because he thought I had been too young to hang out with his friends.

I had one best friend, Lyra. She was the only friend I had. We spent as much time as we could together and our moms being best friends helped as well. Both of our fathers were working in the coal mines, so it made our moms bond.

"Can I invite Lyra?" I asked as I began to throw my hair up into a tidy ponytail.

"As long as you both aren't weird." Gage responded.

Lyra met us at the start of the path that lead us down to the lake. She gave me a hug and was greeted by a half-assed smile from Gage as we both giggled walking through the beautiful, green meadows.

Lyra and I had planned to sneak away for a lake day, but we never managed to do it. So, being invited by my brother was the second best thing. Gage having cute friends also made the lake day with him a bit more bearable too.

I frolicked through the meadows as Lyra followed my lead. Gage was a bit in front of us carrying the picnic basket as we both twirled and danced in the sun. It was a beautiful day for the lake.

Once we got down to the lake, I said hi to the four friends Gage had invited. Lyra and I both set out our towels as we looked out as the five boys jumped into the lake.

"Do you think Gage invited us because he finally has a crush on me?" Lyra asked. I knew she was kidding, but also not at the same time. She had a crush on him for the longest time, but I had always told her to never go there.

"Please, I don't want to even imagine." I responded with a joking tone, as I playfully pretended to make a gagging face at the thought of it.

Lyra's crush was more of a schoolgirl crush. She told me she'd never act on it or try anything, so I let it slide. It was harmless.
