Chapter 16
Honey
She both wanted to and didn't want to go to practice. In the end, there wasn't much she could do about it since attendance was required. She went early again, because she did like to run and it was nice when it was just green head-band guy. She really should ask him what his name was.
She never got the chance.
Green head-band guy was waiting for her on the bleachers when she got there. He popped to his feet and stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Greg."
"Hi, Honey. I mean my name is Honey."
"I know. Can I warm-up with you?"
"Sure." It wasn't like he hadn't before.
"So what pack are you in?" she asked after they'd jogged about a quarter-of-a-mile.
"Mason."
"That's one of the western packs, right?"
"If by western you mean western Indiana, then yes."
"Mmm, a smart-Alec."
"Who is this Alec of which you speak?"
She laughed.
"You're pretty fast. I saw you whiz by me on Wednesday but I couldn't escape the pack or I would have raced you," he said
"Really?" She glanced over at him. He was definitely built like a runner but looks could be deceiving.
"You're looking at me with much doubt."
"No. I was wondering how good you are. You look like a runner and we are wolves after all."
"Your words hold much wisdom, Grasshopper."
"Thanks?"
He nudged her with his elbow. "Hey, maybe we can have a race across the field before anyone else gets here."
"Sure."
Racing Greg across the field was nearly as fun as racing Brayton through the obstacle course. No, it was more fun, because she didn't have to think - she just had to run. He was fast, but they started at an all-out sprint and he tired before her. She slowed down a little, but at the end, she couldn't help herself. She blasted forward again into a round-off and three back-handsprings. She would have done more, but her ribs and her arm were still stiff.
"Wow," Greg said. "I think you nailed that win home."
She grinned at him. "It's called sticking the landing."
"It was pretty impressive. Much better than what I can do."
"Let me see."
He proceeded to do what was either a cartwheel or a handstand, then landed flat on his back.
She offered him a hand. "You nailed that landing."
"Ha ha."
"Wanna race back to the bleachers?" She asked as she pulled him up.
"Can I have a head start?"
"How much?"
"Count of three?"
She pushed him toward the seats. "You have two."
He beat her, but barely. People were starting to arrive but she wanted to do more than stretch her legs. She started doing the series of stretches they always had them do at the start of gymnastics. She finished with a handstand into a front walk-over.
