Everybody wishes to change, experience living the lives they fantasy. But I feel misfortunate for being the chosen one. My forefathers, known for their great deeds and me, who doesn’t even know her powers that well. I hated to see my grandpa fade away. He was the only one I had. I am the only orphan heir of my renowned family. ‘Akiiiii,’ she screamed. That’s usual to me. She must have found a new rodent; it was normal in Daemarrel. This time it was a viscacha, Aurora loved collecting rare ones. She was my little sister, my home. Not by blood, but by choice. In the closest woods, most of the lives were my own. Daisy, my deary horse was recently blessed by a foal and I was currently working on him. He was not as active though, but I loved training animals, they were my favorite pastime. Besides them, I loved travelling and was always moving. This day had been really exhausting, the nearby water lake had dried and I had to go further to fetch water, for myself and Aurora. The sun went down and I fell asleep momentarily after supper. Upcoming weeks were going to be tough as Alex was learning to be my good ride. I took him to the lake next morning for a quick rinse and when he dried, I taught him to gallop above bushes. While he ran, I went chasing him to a far-off place, it looked different from Daemarrel, as if a different town. It was my first visit here and it was soothing my ears already. The melody came from somewhere nearby. Seeking it, I and Allex followed it. It was this boy, red headwear, white shirt, and filthy bottoms. He stood close to a treehouse which seemed to be his own. I hesitated to reach out, unsure if I should interrupt. Alex was no longer running and we sat there for a while. It was only a moment later that I slept.
Hours later when I woke up, there was no more music my ears craved for. I was lying on the floor covered by creepers and flowers. It was the treehouse! it was even appealing from the inside. As I woke up, the boy was with Alex, in my sight. He seemed to have fed him green grass. I climbed down and reached out to him, being grateful. But it was peculiar how he had transferred me up there? Without me noticing? Did he teleport me? “Vernon’’, he finally spoke. ‘Vernon’ I repeated. ‘How did you get me up there Vernon?’ I inquired. ‘you’re not that heavy actually.’ I was surprised knowing he had lifted me up and let me sleep in his very own flower bed, or at least it looked like one. A weird noise broke the silence between us, it was my stomach. I was hungry. And embarrassed. Last night’s meal was my last. It had been around 15 hours I ate anything. He offered me green apples. They were sweet, I had never tasted something this sweet.
‘Pardon me miss, what do I call you as?’ his tone was even sweeter. ‘Oh, I’m sorry, myself Akira.’ I sounded pathetic. ‘I’m from Daemarrel.’ ‘Hmm, bright like your name’
‘What is this place, Vernon?’
‘Bradon, the town of hopes.’
Vernon didn’t seem to have a family either. He smelled blueberries. It was all over and around me. All I wanted was to smell like him.
‘I’m going to a village, it is three miles away, wanna join?’ I did not know my way back home so I agreed.
When we reached, people seemed to already know him. When he started playing his flute. Children surrounded Vernon merrily. I was pleased to hear his flute; I was sure he borrowed it from heaven. It was hours later he came to a halt. Time passed effortlessly. If he was doing this for a mere earn, then he really was an ox of a man. He was determined and it was to achieve big dreams, ones he patiently worked for. People applauded and imparted golden coins, silver coins, and their valuables in his cloth, which rested on the ground, although they weren’t much but just enough.
We were leaving for Bradon on my horse; Alex. It was dark by the time we reached the treehouse; I preferred staying the night here but a part of me wanted to leave.
‘You can sleep inside my house; I’ll be down with Alex.’ He told me, but I argued, it was kind of him to let me stay but this was his home, I was a stranger. I hated to agree but he wouldn’t listen.
When I went up, there were green apples beside the flowerbed. He put them for me. When I lied to sleep, there was an unease which wouldn’t let me sleep. There was this thought; I will be leaving next morning. Because if Vernon was in love, I couldn’t deceive him. He didn’t know I was a shape shifter, once I changed my body, the moments of the old me would be mere memories. This was unfair to him. I was changing sides the whole time, then I finally slept.
A flute woke me up the upcoming day. It was satisfying and I wanted to wake up every morning by this. I descended the ladder.
‘Vernon’
He turned around and glared at me.
‘I want to leave, but I’ve lost my way, please guide me home.’ He looked tensed.
‘Did something disrupt your sleep dear? I’m sorry for the inconvenience.’
The way he spoke made me think he wanted me to stay. ‘No, it’s not that.’
‘Bradon is not where I belong, I want to go home.’ Home is a place where I felt loved and cherished, Bradon was exactly where I belonged. Vernon’s heart was pure, one I refused to break. It would be in hundred disunited pieces when he will know my lie.
