Chapter 1: 11 Years Ago
They had started as enemies living on the same block. Hating each other because they thought the other had everything while the other had nothing. That was until one day, a 9-year-old blonde girl named Amanda was walking down the street, cursing softly as she kicked the pebbles on the ground. She hated her English teacher. Just because she got one word wrong on the spelling bee, the teacher put her in a spelling class. She kept talking to herself until she passed by an alley and heard someone sniffling. Amanda paused in her tracks and turned.
"Hello?" She called out, hand gripping onto her backpack. The blonde didn't hear anything except a whimper.
"I...Is everything okay?" She called out, walking into the alley. She could see a figure on the ground behind the dumpster. "Hello?"
Her head peaked behind the dumpster. She saw a girl cramped in the corner, hugging her knees to her chest. Her dark brown hair covered her face like a curtain. Amanda crouched down in front of her and put a hand on her arm.
"Hey, are you-" She paused when the girl finally lifted her head. She gasped.
"Olivia! Oh, my god. What happened?" Amanda exclaimed, looking over the bruises and cuts on her enemy's face.
"Nothing. Leave me alone."
Amanda rolled her eyes and lifted Olivia's head when she tried to look down.
"What. Happened? Who did this to you?"
"No one." Olivia huffed, hugging her knees closer to her chest and looking away. Amanda sighed and stood up, pulling Olivia's arm.
"I said leave me alone, Amanda."
"Get. Up." The blonde said, pulling Olivia up. She smiled triumphantly when Olivia finally got up. The two walked silently out of the alley, Olivia just following Amanda, not knowing where the blonde was leading her.
A few minutes later, Olivia ended up bumping into Amanda when she suddenly stopped.
"Hey-"
Amanda covered her mouth and Olivia looked up when she heard yelling and something crashing.
"Shh. We gotta sneak into the back." The blonde explained, slowly removing her hand from the brunette's mouth who just nodded in response. They quietly made their way to the back door and made their way inside the house.
"THROW IT AT ME YOU BITCH!" Olivia jumped a little at the sound of Amanda's dad screaming before something shattered against the wall. Amanda grabbed a startled Olivia's hand and they quickly but quietly made their way to Amanda's room. She stopped halfway to her room to check on her little sister, Kim, who was sound asleep before entering Amanda's room. She closed the door behind Olivia and locked the door.
"Wha-"
"I don't wanna talk about it," Amanda said, cutting the brunette off as she threw her backpack on the ground and rummaged around her room, looking for bandages. When she finally found some bandages and towels, she walked to her desk and grabbed the water bottle. She turned to Olivia who was still standing in the middle of the room, awkwardly.
"Well, don't just stand there. Sit on the bed." Amanda said, rolling her eyes. Olivia glared at her before moving to the blonde's bed and sitting down. Amanda grabbed a stool and sat in front of Olivia, placing the bandages and towels on the bed.
"Oh, wait," Amanda said, getting up and walking to her closet where she pulled out a box and pulled out a bottle of vodka.
Olivia frowned, "Uh...I don't drink."
"It's not for drinking. Just...Shut up and let me work on your beat-up face."
Olivia huffed and sat quietly. Amanda poured a small amount of vodka onto a towel and dabbed the cut that was on Olivia's lip making the brunette hiss.
"At least warn me first," Olivia said, flinching away from Amanda. As she let the blonde clean up her cuts, her eyes moved around the room. There were many posters up on the wall and a lot of stuffed animals sitting on the ground, watching them with their pitch-black eyes. Moving her eyes to Amanda's desk, there were piles of books sitting on top of it with a half-opened notebook, and a pencil in between the pages, marking her last used paper. Olivia moved her eyes back to Amanda. Amanda had her tongue poking out of her mouth as she carefully bandaged the cuts and then moved to get a clean towel and poured vodka on it before dabbing the cuts on her enemy's hands.
Amanda glanced up at Olivia and their eyes met.
"What?"
"Nothing," Olivia replied, shaking her head as she winced a bit when the cut started to sting because of the alcohol. "I just...I wonder."
"About what?"
"I...About why...Why do we hate each other so much? One day we were friends and then the next we were just...Enemy's. I mean, we're nine, Amanda. We're not supposed to hate anyone...Well, except people who hurt the people we love."
The blonde in front of her let out a small giggle before sighing. "I don't know...I guess...We thought differently of each other."
"But why?"
Amanda let out an exasperated sigh, "Jeez, I don't know, Olivia! Maybe it's because we have what the other wants!"
"What exactly do I have that you could want!?"
"You have a loving mother! Who is always there at least to pick you up!"
"Yeah, when she's not drinking herself to death."
Amanda paused. No wonder her mother looked tired and red-eyed all the time. She thought it was due to never sleeping because she was working a lot.
"Okay. But, what could I have that you would want?"
"A father, first of all."
Amanda scoffed, "Please. Have him. Actually, no. I wouldn't want you to have him treat you the way he treats me."
The two of them stared at each other quietly before bursting into laughter.
"Both of our lives suck and we thought the other had a better life," Amanda said, bending over in a fit of laughter while Olivia shook her head laughing.
"We're nine. Let's just become friends, yeah?"
Amanda smiled at the brunette. "Friends." Olivia grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug.
