"Why did you betray me, Ashfur?"

"You were the one who betrayed me, Squirrelflight."

The fury in Ashfur's voice rang and stung her all the way through the bone.

"Choosing someone else doesn't change anything. Please, can't we stay friends?,"she pleaded, trying to sound as calm as possible. She didn't want any of this to happen.

"You were my everything, Squirrelflight. I could've given you anything, but you chose Brambleclaw. What could he give you? Orders? A life of stupidity? You don't need him. You need me."

"So you had to nearly kill my kits to prove your so-called love? Obsession isn't love, Ashfur. You need to stop dreaming."

"Why should I? No matter how much you dream, the clans will never be at peace."

The words vibrated, seeming to whip through the leaves. She trembled. The grey tabby looked on smugly, victory reflected in his blue eyes. She didn't want to look in those evil, yet beautiful pools. No matter how much he whispered, she wouldn't listen.

" Y-you said it yourself, Ashfur. Why should I stop hoping for a brighter future? I made my choice and that's that."

" Alright then. I didn't want to bring this up, but..."

Panic must've slipped beneath her threatening facade, because Ashfur grinned.

"D-don't tell anyone, please."

"Well, it would be a shame if your kits somehow turned out not to be yours, no? It would be better if you became my mate instead of hurting Brambleclaw and three poor cats who turn out not to have been yours, don't you think?"

Squirrelflight grimaced. If he managed to spill this information at the next gathering, her reputation would be ruined as crowfood. Her teary eyes turned into an expression of anger and defiance.

"Never."

"You broke my heart, Squirrelflight. Ripped it to pieces. After all these moons, do I still mean nothing to you?"

"I'm sorry Ashfur, but no matter how much your deals convince me, I can't. You of all people understand love, no? If you love me so much, be thoughtful and leave me alone."

She walked off, showing no remorse.
