"Lauren!"
Her vision was foggy as she finally awoke from her slumber. It's so... oddly quiet. So warm. The sun was blinding and burning into her skin, but all it took was a sudden touch on her arm to make her sit up straight.
The lake was beautiful as it always is in the summer. So clean, and the trees around were blooming... But she looked around frantically, eyes finally landing next to her. Both Kate and Carl stared up from the water, shaking her pink pool mattress repeatedly. Only a yelp left her lips before they finally turned it over and she fell in the lake.
Her little feet met the sandy ground and her hair flowed around like a halo, but it felt good- the cold water against her skin. She was floating, but she swam as she had to. Only recently did her mom enroll her in swimming lessons, so she was still learning! The water resistance pulled her down, but her legs fought against the tide, and as soon as she came back to the surface, she made sure their faces were splashed over and over again, and even threw the mattress at their heads as revenge. "I was sleeping, you guys!"
"We're gonna have a sleepover in the woods, later! Wanna come?"
She blinked, "I'm not sure..."
Carl laughed teasingly, "What? Are you scaaared? Baby Laury, baby Laury!"
"No! I'm not a baby! I'm already six... But mommy says we shouldn't be by ourselves for long."
Kate swam to her side, climbing on top of her as she smooched her face all over, giggling when she tried to push her friend away, "Aww, Laury! Don't worry. Carl will protect us. Right, Carl?"
The boy gulped uncertainly, "O-Of course! I'm not scared at all!"
"Okay... Is Beth fine with that, Katie?"
"Yep! She let us sleepover there, by ourselves. Which means she sees us as big kids! Come on, we have to go before the sun sets!"
And so, the three of them swam back out the water, running for their towels. A little tradition, this one! Every summer, they spend a month at Kate's house, and only this year did Carl's and Lauren's parents agree to leave them at Beth's care. But it's a routine, really! First week of July, they spend most of their time going in and out of the woods, camping there overnight with their families, and they bring snacks, and Carl's dad would bring his radio, and they would listen to music aaaaall night, while playing multiple games! On the second week, the Matheson family comes over. They have dinner and lunch together (Charlie has always complained about having to babysit the three "babies", when he's a kid himself, but he can manage), and they go to the lake together! They don't live so far away, just down a couple of hills, but it's still quite the walk. On the third week, it usually rains, which is impressive for summertime. So they stay inside, but that's okay too! Beth always plans game nights, so they have lots of fun!
