Chapter XII

J E N N I E

After our visit to my mother's grave. We sat at the cozy corner of the bustling café in the city, the fragrant aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped us. I watched as Lisa absentmindedly stirred her cup, lost in her thoughts. The air hums with the soft clinking of cups and the distant laughter of other patrons in the cozy cafe.

"Tell me more about your childhood, Jennie," Lisa prodded gently, her voice was soft yet commanding. I took a deep breath, memories flooding back, mustering the courage to share a piece of my past with Lisa.. I grew up in this city, my mother used to bring me here whenever she can.

"I never had a good memories of my childhood, Lisa." I looked outside as I imagined how beautiful that day was, my mother and I came here to buy some cake for my birthday. I let go of her hand and run outside just to follow that butterfly I saw, the next thing I remember my mother was running towards me then pulled me and when I opened my eyes, she was lying on the concrete floor, covered with blood.

"I used to escape whenever I could," I confess quietly, my voice wavering. The memories flood back as I recount the harsh treatment I endured at home. "But every time I was caught by my father, the punishment was worse. It was a maze of fear and loneliness," My voice quivering. "After my mother passed away, my father became cold and distant. He never hugged me or showed any affection. I used to escape to the park, to my mother's grave and to the hills not far from here to find solace in the midst of the chaos at home." Lisa's eyes softened, a flicker of understanding passing through them.

"I'm sorry you had to go through that, Jennie," she murmured, reaching out to hold my hand. In that moment, a wave of warmth washed over me, and I felt a sense of comfort I hadn't experienced in a long time. Despite our initial agreement, a bond was forming between us that neither of us could deny.

Lisa's gaze softens, a flicker of understanding crossing her eyes. It's a side of me I've kept hidden, and I can't help but feel vulnerable laying it all out in the open."And everytime I got caught, I prayed to just die. I begged my father to just kill me." I continue, my voice barely above a whisper, "Just to be with my mother again."A heavy silence lingers between us, broken only by the distant sounds of a bustling city outside. I steal a glance at Lisa, her expression unreadable.

I couldn't help but let out a contented hum. The night sky stretched out above us, dotted with shimmering stars that seemed to dance in the darkness. I stole a glance at Lisa, her silhouette outlined by the soft glow of the moon, her presence strong and comforting.

"Is this the place?" Lisa's voice cut through the quiet night, breaking the gentle hum of crickets around us. I nodded, feeling a sense of peace settle over me.

"Yeah, this is where I used to come when I needed to clear my head. Aside from my mom's grave, this is like my sanctuary." Lisa spread the makeshift blanket, we settled onto the soft cloth as we lean our back at the bumper of her car, the night sky spread out above us like a vast canvas.

The stars twinkling overhead seemed to whisper secrets of the universe. Lost in the beauty of the night, I hardly noticed Lisa's shifting beside me. Our arms barely touching. The gentle breeze carried a faint scent of wildflowers, adding to the tranquility of the moment.

"Thank you for bringing me here," Lisa murmured, her normally confident voice is now soft and unguarded. "I never knew places like this existed." It was moments like these that made me feel a connection growing between us, something beyond our forced arrangement.

As we sat under the starry night, the cool breeze gently caressed our faces. I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me despite the heavy feeling of I had felt seeing Rosie and Lisa together. I glanced at Lisa, her eyes reflecting the shimmering stars above.

"Umm.. I never knew my cousin used to be your girlfriend." I hesitated, I had been holding onto this moment ever since I saw them together.

"Well, yes.." A small smile tugged at my lips as I turned to look at her. I could see a vulnerability in her eyes that I hadn't noticed before. I bit my lower lip as I felt a pang of sting on my chest.

"You two looked good together." I tried to laugh it of as natural as I can. Her gaze softened as she turned to me, her face illuminated by the moonlight.

"She's just part of my past, nothing more." Lisa said, her voice filled with sincerity. "What happened between us is not something I wanna go back. We only have future to walk. And even when we move the clock backwards now, it's not gonna change anything." Lisa's soft gaze made my heart beat so loud.

"Because this time, I have you.," I felt a warmth spread through me, realizing the depth of her words. Before I could say anything, Lisa leaned in slowly and pressed her lips against mine.

The kiss was soft yet filled with unspoken emotions, causing my heart to flutter. A soft moan escaped my lips as I melted into the kiss, feeling a wave of emotions surge within me. In that moment, as our lips were locked in a tender embrace, I knew that our bond was evolving into something deeper than either of us had anticipated.
