"I'm sorry brother, they invited me to another ceremony again. They asked me to bless the newest infant in the village..."
Dream said, his smile dropping. By now, he and Nightmare knew that an invite was a binding contract, there was no choice. He would have to go.
"Again? But...I never see you anymore..."
Nightmare looked down, his usual cranky face saddened. He looked at his feet, wishing Dream would be around more. So they can be like other kids, so they can see each other, so they can be brothers...
"I'm sorry, but..."
Dream takes off his glove, revealing a carving in his arm, one that Nightmare has a matching carving too.
"I'll always be close to you."
Nightmare looked at this, something clicked within him. With a firm look and strong eye contact, he declared...
"I'm going with you."
"...What?"
Dream asked in absolute confusion...
"I'll accompany you to the blessing."
They go together, only for Dream to be dragged screaming and crying away from Nightmare as they believe that his darkness would taint the blessing and the child. The mother was accused of witchcraft and her child was of Satan. Nightmare gets glass, metals, and even shoes thrown at him, causing him to rush out with tears pouring down his face and blood gushing out of his arms and staining his shirt.
He runs back to the tree and climbs up to a branch. He sits on the branch, his tears dropping onto the grass below, and hitting a rose. The red rose turns black.
"They were right...I really am a possessed monster."
Nightmare hid from Dream in the forest, lake, and even churches for the next three days, never explaining his return.
He sighs as he exits, and pours out the fire he had made in his isolated spot in the forest. He hadn't been eating since he was terrible at hunting and gardening would take too long. He minded not. He was used to being starved, but he did not have Dream to lift his spirits, and that stung...
He knew he could not hide forever. He needed Dream. But Dream did not need him. He was better than him, even the mortals could see that. And now he has damned an infant to a life of agony with his presence alone. He tried and tried, but he could never make it end.
All the pain he felt. He tried to drown himself in the lake, but it was too shallow. He tried to strangle himself, but he was too weak. He even tried to hang himself with his shirt, but he couldn't figure out how to tie the damned thing correctly. How could a being as terrible as he did not even have the intellect to end his own life, let alone others?
He must be useless, is what he told himself and he walked out of the dark forest and headed North towards the tree. Towards his brother.
The first thing he sees upon entering the green grassy plain is his village, buzzing with life and music and the smell of freshly baked bread. He looks down and sees a sunflower, it is still premature and fragile. To think with one misstep he could have stomped it into oblivion. The flower reminds him of his brother, radiant and free.
Then he realizes.
He is a lot like a flower. His life is the flower. He could have easily destroyed it before he got to see what beauty it could be. He smiles and picks up speed as he happily races to the tree of feelings, full of life and joy. The place where his life is. Where his brother is. The place he truly belongs. Because even during a new moon, the sun is never too far from the moon, United by the Earth that they stay forever in orbit near.
He returns to the tree, where he finds Dream. But this time is different, something is wrong...
Dream's aura...It is negative. It is sad and weary. Fearful. He hates it, he walks on the other side of the tree, and sits down, quiet as can be. He makes his voice higher to sound like a village child.
"Are you okay?"
He asked, tenderly and softly for his dear brother.
"No, I am not."
Dream says through tears and sniffles.
"How so?"
He asked a sinking feeling in his stomach began. He can not help but feel awful. He made his brother upset by leaving, and to think he could have left him forever. He could have left him alone. Lost, scared, and sad. He would never be able to live with himself from beyond the grave.
"He's...Gone. I miss him...I need him back."
"Who is he?"
Dream takes a deep breath and wipes his tears before continuing.
"The moon..."
Dream cries out in between sobs and whines.
"The moon? What do you mean, it's the day. We don't need the moon."
"Yes, we do!"
Dream shrieked, tears streaming down faster and faster.
"The moon is my brother. I love him with all of my heart. And he left me! He left me here, alone!"
Nightmare sighs, before asking again.
"That must hurt...I'm sorry. Do you know why he left?"
"I think it was me...I did something wrong. I should have spoken up for him. He does not love me anymore. He must hate me now..."
"Why do you think that? He's your brother, he could never hate you..."
"How do you know? It's not like you know him."
"Is that so?"
He asked, curiosity building in his tone.
"You don't know him. You're on the Earth. You unite the sun and moon, but you'll never feel how I feel for him. You'll never feel how he feels for me...That affection. That love. I love him. I love the moon with all my heart and soul and he left me!"
"..."
"I serve no use now. The Earth will have perpetual days without being able to rest in the night and dream about what they wish and it's all MY FAULT!"
Dream yells, tears pouring on the ground and fertilizing the flowers beneath him, his eyes closed tightly in his sorrow.
And before he knew it, he felt warmth. A positive aura that no human could give him. He opens his eyes and looks back to see the one and only moon, here to absorb his solar light.
"Nightmare...?"
"That's me."
"I thought you hated me..."
Nightmare smiles and puts his hands on Dream's shoulders.
"The moon never strays too far from the Sun, you know."
He starts to giggle, hugging his dear brother.
"I would never leave you...Now promise to never leave me."
Dream smiles, and his aura normalizes, bringing light and growth to the plants and wildlife around them.
"I'd never leave you, the Sun never strays too far from the moon, you know."
And there they stayed, living in each other's warmth and love as the stars shined. The sun and moon live on Earth, never straying apart.
