Today was the day - their first proper day on the battlefield. Through these weeks of training Mark and Hyuck have grown as soldiers and friends. Their once youthful faces seem mature and determined as they lock in, clutching their weapon's and awaiting an order from the sergeant.
As they gazed out, the distant echoes of gunfire punctuated the silence, a grim reminder of the chaos that awaited them. Mark tightened his grip on his rifle, steeling himself for the impending onslaught.
"Stay close, Hyuck," Mark said, his voice steady for Hyuck despite the adrenaline and fear coursing through his veins.
Hyuck nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the enemy forces lurked, obscured by smoke and shadows. His heart pounded in his chest, but he drew strength from the presence of Mark by his side.
The order came, and they advanced. The footsteps of hundreds of soldiers echoed against the barren landscape. Bullets whizzed past them, kicking up dirt and debris as they sprinted towards the enemy lines. Explosions rocked the ground, sending shockwaves rippling through the air.
Mark and Hyuck exchanged a fleeting glance, a silent acknowledgment of the danger that surrounded them. Without a word, they pressed forward, their determination matching that of a mature male.
Amidst the chaos, Mark caught sight of an enemy soldier taking aim, his finger poised on the trigger. Reacting on instinct, Mark dove to the ground, pulling Hyuck with him just as the gunfire erupted overhead.
They scrambled for cover, the deafening roar of battle drowning out all other sound. Bullets whistled past them, grazing their uniforms as they huddled together, hearts racing in unison.
"See you on the other side," Mark said, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Hyuck returned the smile, his eyes reflecting both fear and resolve. In that moment, amidst the turmoil of war, they found solace in each other's presence, a bond forged in the heart of conflict.
They rose to their feet slowly, ready to face whatever lay ahead. Together, they would brave the war, not as fellow comrades but as best friends.
However, ample gunfire and thick smoke eventually threw the two friends apart and Mark had no choice but to head forward alone.
All of a sudden, amidst the shouting of comrades in the smoke around him, Mark felt a searing pain rip through his arm. He staggered backward, clutching the wound as blood seeped through his fingers. The world seemed to spin around him as he struggled to maintain his footing, his senses overwhelmed by the deafening roar of gunfire and the agonizing throb of his injury.
Tinnitus filled Marks ears and he stumbled onto one knee. Through the haze of pain and disorientation, Mark's gaze fell upon a soldier in the clear just metres beside him. It was Hyuck, his best friend and comrade-in-arms. But before he could process the reunion of seeing his friend, a barrage of gunfire tore through the air, and Hyuck's body jerked violently as three bullets found their mark, striking him thrice in the chest, making Hyuck fall back with a crash.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl as Mark watched in horror, his mind unable to process the brutality unfolding before him. He wanted to scream, to cry out in anguish, but his voice was lost amidst the chaos of battle.
Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, Mark forced himself to move, propelled by a desperate need to reach his friend's side. Ignoring the pain in his arm and the deafening ringing in his ears, he stumbled forward, his vision blurred by tears and blood.
Finally, after moments of painful stumbling, he collapsed beside Hyuck, his trembling hands reaching out to cradle his friend's broken body. The scene before him was a horror, blood staining the ground beneath them as Hyuck's life ebbed away with each labored breath.
"Hyuck!" Mark's voice was raw with anguish, his heart breaking as he watched the light fade from his friend's golden eyes. "Hang on, mate. Please, don't leave me."
But it was too late. Hyuck's gaze met his, a fleeting glimmer of recognition in his eyes before they dimmed into emptiness. With a shuddering gasp, Hyuck's body went limp in Mark's arms, his life extinguished by the brutality of war.
Tears streamed down Mark's face as he cradled Hyuck's lifeless form, his cries lost amidst the battle. In that moment, amidst the chaos and carnage of war, Mark felt a part of himself die alongside his friend.
Grief-stricken and alone, Mark could only cling to the memory of Hyuck. Hearing a command from the sergeant behind him, Mark gritted his teeth and furrowed his brows into his wet eyes. Mark cradled Hyuck's head one last time before placing him gently down onto the ground. He began tearing off a piece of his own shirt before wrapping it around his wound tightly. He grabbed his gun angrily and stumbled to his feet ready to push forward. A blood stricken tear rolled down his grimaced face for the final time as he stepped over Hyuck with shaky hands and a heavy heart. After taking a few slow steps, he glanced back at his body, pausing for a moment to relive memories from their time together, before heading back towards the enemy line.
