"I can try to reason with him, but he may insist on coming with me"
Everleigh spoke into the old cellphone, holding the device between her shoulder and her cheek while she placed several cans into the shopping basket she had been carrying through the store. What had started as a quick grocery run after work turned into a half filled cart. And it was heavy.
Being in a muggle store only meant she couldn't use magic to make the groceries float behind her. She was going to have to carry those home."But that's even better!" The excitement in her mother's voice was quite palpable, as the squeal of joy echoed in her ear. Everleigh moved the phone away a few inches, wincing. "Your father and I are dying to see you both again".
"Sebastian has never spent the holidays away from his sister, mother", she made sure to emphasize the last word, ignoring the sigh at the other side of the line. "Maybe you two should come here, instead".
"Well, I'll have to talk to your dad and see if our schedule allows it this year". Everleigh moved down the aisle, gaze on the top shelves for the specific brand of coffee she liked. She switched the phone to her other ear, just as she saw the green packaging she was looking for. "But tell me. How's everything at work? Are things easing up for you?"
The girl didn't have the heart to tell her progenitor that her job didn't exactly allow things to ease up for her. After two years working for the Ministry, it was true that Everleigh felt more confident dealing with the various scenarios she was presented while on the field, but magic still found a way to surprise her. The silver lining was that not only did she have a fantastic team to rely on, but Sebastian, as curse-breaker, also worked alongside her very frequently.
A blessing and a curse, really.Only recently had Everleigh found out that her wonderful husband had requested to be on the same team as her if she was to leave the Ministry offices to work on a case.
"Things are really good", Everleigh said, reluctantly walking away from the snack aisle to head towards the cashier. "Sebastian is with me all the time. Except when he is sent away to do his own work in another country."A thought came to mind and she chuckled softly, waiting in line to pay. "He had to go to France for three days. I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to get things done over there in a few hours only so he can be home by tonight".
Everleigh's mom laughed with her.
"That boy loves you so much".
"I think he just has separation anxiety", Everleigh declared jokingly, but the smirk on her face transformed into a soft smile thinking about Sebastian and the last kiss they had shared before he had to leave two days prior. She watched the woman in front of her pay the cashier and she spoke on the phone before her mom could try to keep her talking longer. "I have to go. I still have to get home and make dinner. I will call you next week when I'm running errands again. I love you, mom."
