There were sounds first.
Constant footsteps. And a machine beeping. Voices came and went, too convoluted to identify them.
She opened her eyes slowly, feeling like the hardest task she had ever had to accomplish. Light bled through the ceiling, too fluorescent to belong to the sun.
It took several seconds for her vision to adjust to the brightness, and that was when she realized she was in a hospital room. Everything was white, from the walls to the blankets covering her body.
She caught a glimpse of a woman leaving the room at that moment, also wearing a white uniform. A nurse, probably.
Everleigh blinked again, gaze sweeping across the space towards the other side, where a big window was throwing nothing but darkness. It was already night out. She had been unconscious for hours, it appeared.
There was someone sitting in a chair in front of the window, his dark and dirty clothes contrasting with the cleanliness around him.
Sebastian was leaning forward on his seat, elbows resting on his spread thighs while the heels of his hands were pressed against his face and he was rubbing it with an exhausted motion. His right leg was bouncing incessantly with impatience. He looked as if he was about to suffer a mental breakdown.
Everleigh's mouth opened to call for him, but she only managed to yelp. It was enough for the boy to lift his head from his palms and look towards the bed. His shoulders deflated immediately before he came up to his feet and dashed to her bedside.
"Hello, darling". The mattress dipped next to Everleigh, big enough to accommodate Sebastian's size. Soft hands stroked her cheeks, pushing out strands of hair out of her face. "How are you feeling? Are you in pain?"
She responded with a shake of her head, trying to feel for any discomfort. But beyond a mild headache, which could very well be due to the bright lighting, there was nothing. Everleigh cleared her burning throat before asking.
"Wh–what happened?"
Sebastian's jaw tightened momentarily, but as his eyes studied her features, something in him softened. He exhaled a long breath, not stopping the brushing of his fingers around her skin.
"You lost more blood than I realized", he explained. "By the time we made it out, you had collapsed completely". Her eyes must have given away the silent question, because he added. "Volkov managed to use an Amplifying charm to pinpoint our location and meet us halfway. We weren't far off from the cave entrance".
"Is everyone alright?"
"A moment after you went down, Weiss also stepped into one of the sinkholes", Sebastian continued with a flat tone. "But someone caught him right on time. After I got you out, I had to take you somewhere to give you the proper care". He paused, and Everleigh glanced around the room again. That beeping was still there, and it finally dawned on her where she was. A Muggle hospital. "None of the potions we carried worked on you. Whatever that plant was, it was all over your clothes, your wounds... It seems you were right about it. It nullifies any magical medicine when in contact with skin or bloodstream, so we had to do it the Muggle way".
