Chapter 2
Lunch with Jake was great. We talked, we laughed, we ate, and Jake accidentally made milk come out of his nose from laughing too much. (Which just made me laugh even more). "So, what are your parents like?" He asks. "Oh, they died like, a billion years ago, but whatever." "Oh. Okay." Oh my Gosh. Someone actually didn't care enough to say I'm sorry when I tell them about my parents? I love this guy! "Thanks for not making a big deal out of it," I say. "Sure thing." Jake said. "So, what's the deal with your 'rents?" I ask. "Oh you know I hate them, they hate me. The usual teen-parents relationship." I laugh. "Just kidding. Their actually okay I guess. My mom is a pediatrician and my dad is a real estate agent."
"Oh please, you must tell me the agency your dad works for." I say dramatically.
"State Farm."
"Like a good neighbor, Jake's father is there!" I sing. I hope he wouldn't make a comment on my singing "Wow, Jenna. You have an amazing voice. You know, with a little Bass Guitar, which I just happen to play," he says smugly, "You could be the next Mariah Carey." he explaines. "Actually, I used to be in a band, but then the Bass and drums, they were brothers, moved to Florida. So I was left alone." I said. "Well, maybe after Fa—." Briiiinnnnggg! The horrible song of the bell sings in my ears. "What class do you have next?" asked Jake. "Uh, Social Studies. Snore." I said, annoyed. "Well then, how about I walk you to 'Uh Social Studies Snore'." he said with a smile. I lightly and playfully punched him in the arm. I felt his big bicep under my fist as I pressed it to his arm. "Sure. I'd love that." I told him. "Okay then. One-way walk to Social Studies
Social Studies was a total bore. I kept passing notes to Heidi and Maren. I told them everything that happened that happened with Jake and I. it went something like this:
Emily: Where were you at lunch today??!!
Me: I hung out with... Jake.
Emily: Like Jake, you had a crush on since, like, third grade Jake?!
Me: Yes. That Jake.
Emily: :P
Me: HEY! We didn't have any 'fun' or anything like that. He just... asked me out.
emili: OMG!!! HE ASKED YOU OUT?????!!!!!!!
Me: Yes Heidi he ask—
"Mrs. Calhori? Are you passing notes in my class?" asked Mr. Smith. "Especially with MY DAUGHTER?!" he almost screamed. "Were you passing notes with anyone else?" he asked. "They were passing with me too, sir." said Maren. "All three of you, up here now. Since your note is so important that you have to do it during my class, you can read it to everybody. Come on now, hustle it up!" he said. We walked up to the front of the classroom, one by one. Maren unfolded the paper, sighed, and started reading. "Where were you at lunch today?" Then she handed the paper to me and I read. "I hung out with," I paused and sighed. "Jake." I finished. I read the next line in my head and dreaded passing it to Heidi. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, breathed loudly, then opened her eyes and started to read. I almost couldn't take it. I closed my eyes and tilted my head down. I heard Heidi say the words and I finally broke. I opened my eyes and ran out of the room as the laughter of my classmates followed.
. . .
"Jenna? Jenna, I know you're in there, because I can hear you sniffling." I realized that voice. It was Heidi. She said, "Look, I am so sorry I read that to everybody. But dad already told me we would have to talk about this at home." It was quiet for a moment. Then I said, "Did you guys continue reading the note?" "Dad insisted. My gosh, Jenna. I am so sorry." She said. "It's fine. If this date goes well, I guess it won't matter. But if this date goes badly, the whole freaking school, including Jake is going to know my stupid little secret. Uhhh!" I kind of screamed. "I know. As teenagers, our lives are too damn hard." Heidi said. Right then the bell rang. "C'mon now the day is over. Let's find Maren and go shopping or something. We can get you something to wear on your date!!! Come on Jenna, lets shopy wopy! Who is a good Jen—" I interrupted her baby talk. "Okay I will go shopping with you. Just please stop talking in that voice!" Then I heard a different set of footsteps. Then voice. "Um, Heidi? Mr. Smith would like to see you and Jenna before you leave." said the voice. I think it was a girl in our class named Ashley Taylor. "Okay. By the way, Ashley, we are going shopping. You want to come with? But on one condition: you have to pry Maren away from Levi long enough to tell her to meet us in the parking lot." said Heidi. "Sure. I would love to go shopping with you guys. And sure, I'll get Maren." said Ashley. "I'm actually kind of excited now. Yay!" I said. "Off to dad?" asked Heidi as I walked into the hallway to meet her. "Off to dad we go," I said. And together we walked to Mr. Smith's room, both of us preparing for the worst.
. . .
"Okay before anyone of you starts picking out anything, there has to be some kind of blue, turquoise, and or aqua in it. And if you can't find any dresses a skirt will do just as good." I gave orders to all the girls. They were standing in a line outside of Dress Barn. I was walking in front of them like some kind of general of his army. "Any questions?" Ashley raised her hand. "Oh, Ashley, sorry, I forgot you don't know me as well as Bree and Em. Your question?" "Why does it have to be blue?" Bree and Em bust out laughing. I giggled. We all piled into the store checking every item. Before this, we had raided a CJ Banks, rue 21, and the Gap. No luck. Ashley was talking to the lady at the counter, who was giving her a dressing room.
When she got the key, Ashley told all the girls where to put the suggestions. Knowing how much Maren and Heidi loved messing around with me, I was afraid to see some of their suggestions.
. . .
"Okay, girls! Suggestion time!" I walked into the dressing room. There were so many choices. Many of the dresses were just flat out gorgeous. How am I to choose? I tried on many of the dresses on, some not fitting.Probably from Ashley, I thought.
By the time I finished trying on all of the dresses, I narrowed it down to two. The first one was a beautiful, dark blue dress, with a black laced part at the top that covers my neck and almost shoulders. It had a black belt around the waist and was high in the front and low in the back. The other dress reminded me of Texas, or, in other words, something that a girl in Texas would wear. It was a turquoise one sleeve dress with a thick braided brown belt around the waist. I could definitely see myself wearing it, but for a first date I think the dark blue dress would do better. But just in case I tried them on for the girls. They huddled, giggled and agreed on the dark blue. But, I bought them both any way, for good luck.
We all were walking out of Dress Barn when I suddenly saw Jake walking up towards us. My feet moved before my brain did. I walked forward straight into a wall then into the nearest store. Cringing, I immediately realized what store I was in. Jake was still coming and I...I was in Victoria's Secret.
