Empty. It was empty.
He sighed. Why was he even surprised? It was always empty.
Slowly, he swam over to his usual spot at one of the four gates. To watch. Like he always did.
Hours, days, years... it didn't matter. He watched. He watched like his father had, like his grandfather had, like his great-grandfather had... like they all had.
He knew there was nothing left to watch over. Nobody would ever find this place.
But for some strange reason, he felt like he had to keep on watching. Maybe because of his ancestors, because he felt like he had to, for their sake.
But then there was this feeling in his gut, telling him... that maybe, one day... someone would come and end his misery.
And his gut feeling had never been wrong before.
