Leaning against the doorway, my morning routine complete, I observed the touching scene between Hajime and Kanae. Despite his rugged exterior, Hajime was a softie when it came to our daughter, especially with her big, round eyes that mirrored his own. If the boys from Seijoh, his old volleyball club saw him now, they'd never let him live it down. Toru already teased him enough about being a softie, often earning a punch in return. Carefully gathering Kanae's hair, Hajime asked, "What kind of hairstyle do you want today, princess?" His tone was gentle yet eager, reflecting his dedication to making her happy.
"Hmm, I want the braid that Mommy often makes for me, the fish thing braid," Kanae declared, mischief dancing in her eyes as she gestured with her hands. Her request was clear, but the intricacies of the hairstyle seemed to puzzle Hajime momentarily. I couldn't help but suppress a soft chuckle at his perplexed expression. Despite my urge to step in and assist, I refrained, recognizing Hajime's unwavering determination to grant Kanae's wish on his own. His commitment to making our daughter happy, even in the face of a challenging hairstyle request, was truly admirable.
Unfazed by his initial confusion, Hajime's resolve remained strong, fueled by Kanae's irresistible puppy-dog eyes. With determination etched on his face, he set out to create the tricky fishtail braid. However, it quickly became apparent that his hairstyling skills were no match for Kanae's intricate request. Despite his best efforts, the result fell short of Kanae's vision. Yet, amidst the failed attempt, I couldn't help but admire Hajime's unwavering dedication to his daughter's happiness, even if it meant stepping out of his comfort zone.
As Kanae erupted into laughter, she teasingly quipped, "Oh Daddy, you can't do the braid." A blush crept onto Hajime's cheeks, a touch embarrassed by his failed attempt at the hairstyle.
Turning to me with a hopeful gaze, Kanae asked, "Mum, can you still save my hair?" Her sweet smile melted my heart, evoking a chuckle and a slight smirk from me.
Glancing at Hajime, who regarded his daughter with wide eyes, he interjected with a playful tone, "Hey young lady, your dad did his best. You don't have to break my heart like that."
I gently nudged Hajime as we approached her to fulfill her hairstyle request. While I carefully crafted the fishtail braid, Hajime watched closely, taking mental notes to ensure he could replicate the style in the future. After completing the braid and retrieving Kanae's school bag from her desk, I called out to Hajime to assist with her shoes while I loaded the bag into the car. With tender care, Hajime helped Kanae with her shoes, checking her outfit to ensure everything was in place.
Leading Kanae to the car, Hajime lifted her into the child seat and secured her belt, planting a kiss on her forehead and wishing her a wonderful day at school. With our goodbyes exchanged, I drove off towards her school.
Upon arrival, I helped Kanae out of the car, and she immediately dashed towards her favorite teacher, Sugawara Koishi, enthusiastically greeting him. Sugawara chuckled at her excitement and greeted her in return, briefly acknowledging me with a smile. Handing Kanae her bag, I kissed her cheek and reminded her to behave. She nodded, returning the kiss on my cheek before running off to join her friends.
