Ash had poured over his books for weeks, barely speaking to Christine in that time as he looked for a solution to her mortality. He knew the basics of Creation. Sharing his body and blood with a human. But what did that mean? How was he to do that, if not just having sex with Christine as he had been? Although they enjoyed it, it didn't seem to have any effect on the longevity of her life. It was frustrating him to no end that he might not be able to see Christine again someday.
There was the scroll and the explanation his father had given him. Ash recalled the memory Lucifer had shared with him. It seemed excruciating, the way his own brother had betrayed him and banished him from his home. Ash still didn't know why. Nobody in Hell did, except maybe Brinny, but Ash knew she wouldn't divulge anything to him. Lucifer didn't talk about his past, especially not with Ash.
"Baby?" Christine walked down the basement steps, yanking Ash out of his spiraling thoughts, "I'm home."
"Hi," Ash looked up from his scroll, "How was work?"
"Fine. I got paid today, so that's good."
Ash smiled at her.
"Any luck?" Christine asked, nodding at the scroll on the desk. She wanted this immortality thing to work out, but it seemed to be driving Ash mad.
"I can't say yes," Ash sighed, "It's got to be something about the memory my father showed me."
"Memory?" Christine asked. She took a seat in the chair next to him. "Why didn't you tell me about this? I can help!"
"I know, sweetheart. My brain has just been so clouded lately, I didn't want to bother you with it."
Christine glared at him, "I have a master's degree. Stop patronizing me."
"I'm not!"
"You don't have to protect me from this shit!" Christine sighed, aggravated. "I could've helped you a long time ago, if you'd just been honest with me."
"I'm sorry," Ash cringed. He really should've just let her help, but he hadn't wanted to overwhelm her. She already had her job and all the stresses of life to deal with. "You're right. I don't need to protect you from this knowledge. I just didn't want you getting overwhelmed."
Christine nodded. "Show me the memory."
Ash nodded and watched as her eyes rolled back in her head. This was no ordinary telepathic communication, as it came from Lucifer himself. Christine was still a human, and it might've overpowered her psyche.
A moment later, Christine gasped, coming to. Her eyes returned to normal. Ash pressed his hand to her forehead, trying to calm her.
"Holy fuck," she breathed.
"Are you alright?"
"Ash, my love. You are very smart. But you weren't raised Catholic, and you're a demon," Christine giggled, "Which tells me you've never touched a Bible."
"So?" Ash didn't know where she was going with this.
"So you don't know what happened from the other perspective." Christine chose her words carefully, so she wouldn't offend him. "Um, Lucifer was banished from Heaven by the other angels, as I remember. Like he showed you."
"Yeah, then what?"
"He came to Earth and created sin and temptation for humans. That's how the story goes, anyway... He came to the Garden of Eden disguised as a serpent and tempted Eve into eating an apple. Then, she was punished."
"Why couldn't she eat an apple?" Ash was perplexed by this human anecdote.
"I didn't write it! It's just some weird story meant to keep women oppressed and blame us for the fall of man." Christine sighed, "The point is, anyway, your father was an angel first. He was God's favorite. See, this memory combined with what I know tells me the other angels became jealous. Are you following?"
