2 MONTHS BEFORE APOCALYSPSE

It was late, like 2AM, and he was on the phone, "Okay sir I'll tell her.....I'll have her ready by then." He hung up the phone before doing a little happy dance. He got a special offer from his base commander, he can bring his only daughter to Northern Light Base. WOW! "Genaya! get over here, I have great news!" He called out to his daughter.

"Yes daddy?" She answered. For Genaya being only ten, the chances for her to go to base were very slim.

"You remember I have to leave tomorrow for Northern Light Base?" Simon, her dad asked. She nodded. "Well you also know how I still haven't found anyone to take care of you while I'm gone."

Genaya gulped. She hopped that her dad could stay home. Losing her mom, Rebecca, to some deadly virus just a year ago, she held on to Simon for dear life.

He put on a sad face to tease his daughter a bit. "Well my commander just called, he said," He couldn't help it anymore, his face now had a smile that went from ear to ear, "I get to take you with me!" He shouted excitedly.

Genaya leaped in the air with joy. "Really daddy, I can go?" she wanted to make sure this wasn't a joke.

"Really really." Simon insured. Genaya pulled her dad into a big hug. A hug so big that Simon was gasping for air. "Wow little solider, your getting stronger by the minute!" He marveled at his daughter's strength. "We leave in a few hours, so go get packed, okay." He saluted her and she returned it, marching up the stairs to her room to pack.

By the time 4AM rolled around, Genaya was completely packed with the necessary needs. A brush for her long, light brown hair, a toothbrush, of course her phone and earbuds, and the clothes she holds dear to her heart.

When she was nine, her mother had made her a full military uniform that matched her dad's perfectly. Same with her pants, but down her right leg it said "Little Lieutenant" and it said the same on the back of her jacket and hat. Genaya had taken the same materials, and not to mention skills, to make at least ten more uniforms of her own. If you didn't know that they were made by her, you would have said that they were bought from the store. She also had light brown combat boots to fit her small feet.

After brushing her hair and putting it in a bun right on top of her head, she slowly made her way over to her bookshelf, where a picture of her mother, father, and herself, sat for a family portrait. Rebecca, her mother, was on the left side, sitting back-to-back with her father, Simon, both facing the camera. Genaya sat in the middle and used her parents to support her back. A tear found its way down her cheek as she grabbed the family picture an put it in her bag.

The doorbell rang as she grabbed her hat and literally flew down the stairs. Just as she reached the bottom, she put her hat on. "Who could be here at this time of night?" she asked

"I don't know." Simon answered as he opened the door. " Well I guess its the commander. What are you doing here?" he asked.

"Well it's going to be hard to get through security with her, so because I gave the order, you guys are going to go through with me." Commander Thompson explained to them.

"Okay great! We're just about ready, Genaya do you need anything else?" He turned towards to his daughter.

She shook her head, "Do you need anything?"

The loaded everything into Commander Thompson's SUV and set off. After about an hour in the spacious car, Simon dozed off. "So how did you become a lieutenant Genaya?" Commander Thompson finally spoke up.

"Hmm....." She mumbled, half asleep, "Oh that. My mom had the idea of 'Little lieutenant'" She answers, yawning.

"Oh, I see." He dropped the subject. If there's one thing you don't talk about with Genaya, it was her mom.

Only the high ranks of the armies and research facilities knew what happened to her. Well of course Simon knew that too, to think Genaya could understand that, it was too much. Rebecca had been one of the first humans to catch the nasty virus. While prepping her for an autopsy, Rebecca's eyes suddenly opened and she grabbed the doctor's arm and bit into it. The doctor died after a while, but she came back like Rebecca did. Both went after all researchers in the small facility. Soon everyone was dead in there, the place was dead. The virus was called Zombie Fever, or Z Fever for short. The virus got its name for the detail that people came back to life after dying and eating other people.

They finally pulled into the hanger as Genaya and Simon awoke. "Okay, Genaya you will come with me so I can get you through, and Simon, go through normally." Commander Thompson told them.

Genaya slumped out of the car, half asleep. "Ow!" She yelled out. She had slipped on a black sheet of ice right under her.

"You okay?" Commander Thompson asked as he slipped on the same sheet of ice. There they were, laughing uncontrollably on the ground, trying to get up. They finally both got up and headed towards security.

As they came to the security gate, Thompson broke the silence once more. "Hey Genaya, I want to give you something." She turned to look at him. He knelt down to meet her eyes. "Give me your hand." She held out her hand. He put a small pin in her hand. "This pin means your a real lieutenant, they will let you pass through if you ware this." She pinned it to her uniform.

I have to say, it finished her uniform completely.

"Thank you Commander." She hugged him.

Needless to say, they made it through without any problems.

"Your dad should be waiting by the plane, go find him."

Genaya picked up her duffel bag, that also matched her uniform, and went to find her dad. When Simon spotted his daughter, he lead her over to the spot where his duffel bag sat. She placed her bag down next to his as her friend, a thirteen year-old boy, tackled her into a hug.

"Tommy! Get off of me!" Genaya giggled. when she got up she pushed him away playfully.

"Hey Gen, what are you doing here?" Tommy asked her. She reached out to grab her bag and tossed it at her dad's bag. "What, how?" Tommy was surprised now, 'How is it she gets to go with her dad?'

"By order of the commander." She turned towards him to show off her pin.

"Wow! Your lucky." Tommy hugged her, "I'll see you when you get back then.' He walked off.

"Attention!" The commanding sergeant yelled. All soldiers, including Genaya, stood straight up, "At ease. Be sure to make sure all bags are secure, we leave in ten!" He made sure that he was herd throughout the hanger.

Ten minutes later they were headed towards Northern Light.

That was four years ago.
