(Eight Years Later)
"Have a good day at school, honey! Be safe! I love you so much!" Edaline called after handing Sophie her lunch.
"Bye, Mom! I will! Love you!" Sophie called back, sprinting down the street. She was allowed to go to school by herself now, because Sophie had repeatedly complained that her parents woke up late and could never get her to school on time.
Biana ended up meeting her on the next street, just before the school appeared in their sight.
"You excited for our first day of middle school?" Biana asked, sounding excited as they stepped into the doors. Now they could finally have lockers outside of the classroom instead of cubbies inside, like the elementary schoolers had.
"Yeah, duh." Sophie replied, glancing at her locker number on the paper in her hands before shoving her backpack into the door. Biana did the same, and they slammed them shut, checking to make sure they were locked before they checked their schedules.
"Okay... Shoot. We don't have the same homeroom! I guess we'll see each other during science, though." Biana mumbled, studying both papers before she sighed heavily. "Oh well."
"Aww... I don't wanna make new friends." Sophie whined. Biana nodded in agreement, her expression looking grim.
"I'm sure you'll at least know one person there. Try to be positive. See you later." Biana replied, hugging Sophie before she set off to her class two floors above Sophie's.
Sophie squared her shoulders, took a deep breath, and walked to her classroom, nervously knocking on the door when she arrived.
"Name, please." The woman said when she opened the door. She was holding a clipboard. Sophie swallowed hard.
"Sophie Foster." She mumbled as the lady wrote something down on her paper.
"Perfect... Your seat is by the window, in the back. You can read a book while you wait for instructions. Please, no talking." The woman said. "My name is Mrs. Woods."
"Nice to meet you." Sophie said awkwardly before she slipped past her and sat down in the seat Mrs. Woods had pointed to. Sophie scanned the classroom. It was pretty neat, probably because it was the first day. She found a familiar boy was sitting behind her.
"Keefe? Is that you?" Sophie asked quietly, careful to keep out of earshot from the teacher. Keefe's head snapped up when he heard her voice. He smirked.
"The one and only." He agreed.
"I didn't know we would be in the same class." Sophie noted. Keefe nod-shrugged.
"I guess we are. You're stuck with me now." He teased. Sophie rolled her eyes.
"I'm just glad I know somebody in this class. I thought I would be alone for homeroom." Sophie finally admitted. Keefe grinned.
"Me too." He looked kind of embarrassed. "I know I should be popular, but... It's pretty hard when you don't know anyone."
"Yeah." Sophie agreed. "Well, now you're with me. And you know I always get hurt doing something stupid. Maybe we'll become popular for that."
Keefe laughed.
"You have some kind of death wish, Foster." Keefe commented. "And I'm all for it, but... Just don't get hurt too much, 'kay?" Sophie grinned.
"No promises, but... I'll try." Sophie teased.
"Alright, class, let's get started!" Mrs. Woods exclaimed, clapping her hands together and ending their conversation.

Apparently, there was a class in between science where Sophie and Keefe were together. Biana was in a different class, due to their different schedules. Meanwhile, there was only one class where Keefe wasn't in Sophie's class.
That class in between science and homeroom was library time. You basically read and study for an hour, which is helpful for some students, like Sophie. But it's also super boring for kids like Keefe. And pretty much all of the boys.
"This is SO boring." Keefe complained, closing his comic book and setting it on the table.
"It's not boring, it's helpful." Sophie argued.
"Not for us!" He countered. "Remember? We both have photographic memories. There's no point in being here."
"Maybe, but... We're not ditching classes like we did in elementary school. I got at least four detentions for listening to you." She insisted.
"Aw, come on, Foster! Please? You can blame me completely if we get caught, but I'm pretty sure we won't because of how awesome I am at lying." Keefe begged.
"The answer is no." Sophie replied. Keefe groaned so loudly it turned heads.
"Fine." He muttered, crossing his arms.
"Yo, freak!" A voice shouted. Sophie cringed.
Keefe didn't know she had a bully, and now here they were, in the exact same space together. Her bully's name was Cameron. He mostly focused on teasing her for having a photographic memory, and Keefe also had a photographic memory...
Both of the boys studied each other for a second before Cameron turned to Sophie with a wicked smile.
"You better do my homework again, Foster. We don't want a repeat of last time, huh?" Cameron asked, smirking wider when Sophie tried hiding behind her hair.
"Why does she have to listen to you? Is there some kinda rule where idiots get special treatment? Cause that doesn't seem fair." Keefe jumped in. Cameron's eyes narrowed at Keefe and he poked Keefe's chest as he got up in his face.
"Did you just call me an idiot? Because I don't think I heard you." Cameron countered. Keefe's smirk widened.
"You didn't hear me, idiot? Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to say it louder, then." Keefe replied, stepping back so Cameron couldn't put his hands on him. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
"I think I'll do the hard way." Cameron decided. Keefe shrugged.
"Alright, whatever you want, man." Keefe said, smirking as he tripped Cameron with a chair, grabbed Sophie's hand, and sprinted out of the library. Lots of shouting followed them as they ran and finally ended up hiding in the janitor's closet.
"Thanks." Sophie whispered, still out of breath. Suddenly, they both seemed to realize how close they were in the tiny space.
"No problem." He paused. "He calls you Foster, too?" Keefe asked quietly. Sophie shrug-nodded.
"I guess he wants to intimidate me, but it kind of reminds me of you." Sophie blurted out. She wanted to clamp her hands over her mouth, but she just stared at her feet instead.
"Well, if an annoying wimp like that can be tripped by a chair and has super bad hair," Keefe said, making Sophie laugh. "Then he doesn't deserve to call you Foster." His smirk turned into a soft smile, making Sophie hide behind her hair again.
"Do you think they're gone?" Sophie asked quietly, tempted to peek. Keefe shrugged.
"Lemme check." He leaned over Sophie to check through the doorway, making Sophie blush. But Keefe didn't seem to notice. He grinned when he leaned back.
"They're gone. Let's go." He took Sophie's hand, surprising her temporarily before they ran out of the janitor's closet. Then they got into their next classroom right on time. Thankfully, they didn't see Cameron for the rest of the day. But Sophie couldn't help wondering what her life would be like without Keefe there to help her.
