I think I'm gonna do a fantasy themed au for the States
Languages: My idea for this is to have languages commonly spoken in those states to be more common in certain regions of the 'world', like louisiana and places like Haiti, (which I might mention if I remember ) will stuff like creole, Louisiana a old probably speak French and creole.
Texas and states like New mexico Arizona Utah Nevada and sometimes California would speak Spanish
The more northern states would probably speak more English and mix of native American languages.
New England probably knows some Irish and Swedish madey some Italian too.
I'm not sure about the Midwest and the others
The rest of the states would would probably speak 'common', which would be English and probably have diffrenten languages they know, like how lousiana knows Creole and french.
