"So how are preparations going for your solo debut?" You asked Chuu as she made herself comfortable on your sofa. She was leaned up against you with her head resting on your shoulder and her positioning had caused your shirt to ride up slightly. Her long hair tickled the small portion of your midriff which was exposed but you didn't mind.
It had been a few weeks since you had both caught up because she had been so busy. As her friend, you have been over the moon for her, ever since she signed with her new company. After she had such a rough experience in the music industry, you had been worried that she could be taken advantage of again and fed empty promises but since signing her contract and getting the go ahead for her solo debut, you knew in your heart that she was in a good place.
"It's going really well!" Chuu gushed. "I had a recording session last week that went amazingly and if all goes to plan the producers will be emailing me today with the final cut of one of the songs."
You were ecstatic for her. You've been friends for a few years now and you supported her through all her achievements as well as the obstacles she had faced along the way. There were many nights where you held her in your arms while she cried her heart out and she would do the exact same for you without question. And maybe, there was a chance that through all the time you spent together that you began to develop feelings that were more romantic than platonic towards her.
You wished you could act on your feelings and confess your crush but so much held you back. With everything Chuu had gone through as an idol, the timing was never right. And now that she was preparing to re-enter the music industry but as a soloist, you were worried that your confession could dampen the high she was on if she didn't feel the same. So you had kept your crush a secret for a long time, hoping it would eventually fade out and things would go back to how they used to be.
Though, if anything the crush became stronger.
"That's amazing!" You grinned back at her as you reached for the tv remote to load the movie you both had been planning on watching today as you chatted. "Am I allowed to ask what the song is about or is that top secret?"
"Only if you don't tell Dispatch," she joked and you scoffed at her in mock annoyance.
"I would never!"
"I know, I know," she reassured you, stroking your arm.
Her touch lit sparks through your body and you had to do everything in your power to try and keep a cool exterior.
"Anyway the song?" Your voice came out breathy.
"Yeah so it's about a girl I have a crush on," Chuu gave a sheepish grin. "I wrote it a while back."
You forced a smile but inside you were absolutely crushed. You should've known that this day was going to come when you would be confronted with the fact that Chuu could have romantic feelings for someone else. You were upset for yourself of course but, after all, you were her friend and you were happy that she got to experience all the feelings that came with a crush. So you had to push back your own self pity for the time being. There was plenty of time for crying later. And ice cream.
"Yeah?" You asked, trying to keep your voice steady. "Wanna tell me about her?"
"I'll play you the song if it's ready today," she promised. "I think that might be a good way to tell you about her."
You wanted to press her for more details but Chuu began fiddling with the button on her cardigan, fastening and unfastening it and wouldn't make eye contact with you. Thinking she was just a bit embarrassed to talk about her crush, you just nodded and turned on the movie to pacify her.
—
She barely paid attention the the movie, despite telling you for weeks that she was excited to see it. Every time her phone buzzed, Chuu would check it immediately, hoping it was a copy of the song from her producers. This had made you slightly distracted too and you watched her in amusement as she seemed so eager to finally listen to it.
And she finally did get the email she was waiting for halfway through the movie. She practically jumped off the sofa in excitement and you just giggled as she opened up the email.
"It's here, it's here!" She gasped and you watched her open the attached file.
The introduction to the song was enough to make your heart burst. The instrumental was so romantic and mesmerizing and when Chuu's voice played through her phone your stomach did backflips. Your mouth was hanging open as you listened along and Chuu watched your reactions. But you didn't dare speak because you didn't want to interrupt the magic of the song.
The lyrics were nothing short of dreamy. And the emotions in Chuu's voice had you captivated. She sang about a deep longing love for someone though she was unsure how this person would feel if she told them she wanted something more. But as the chorus began and the lyrics began to describe the particular person and the time they both spend together, you couldn't help but feel a sense of deja vu. Because the events she had written about were things that she only did with you. And the person she was describing sounded a lot like you, also. Granted, this person was described a lot more positively than you'd describe yourself but a lot of the things added up.
The cogs in your head were beginning to turn but you didn't want to assume anything yet and kept silent as you listened. However, as the song progressed, you became more and more certain that the lyrics were about you. Was that too much of a leap, though? And what if you said something and it turns out it's about someone else?
The song finished and neither of you moved. You both sat in silence, unsure of what to say.
Eventually, Chuu gave an awkward cough.
"What did you think?" She whispered, finding the courage to speak.
"It's - it's a work of art," you said honestly, watching her face closely to try and figure out the question on your mind.
Was this about you?
"And the lyrics?" She pressed hopefully as she cautiously placed her hand on your thigh.
You couldn't hide your feelings anymore. You needed to tell her the truth.
"I like you," you rushed, the words tumbling out so quickly you couldn't stop them if you tried. "As more than a friend. I've liked you for the longest time and I —"
Before you could finish your rambling, Chuu reached out to cup your cheeks and bring you in for a kiss. Her lips burned against yours and you kissed her back feverishly, desperate to make up for all the times you wanted to kiss her but didn't. Your wrapped your hands around her neck to gently pull her closer, desperate to close the distance. As you did this her hands moved to your head, running her fingers through your hair and occasionally giving a slight tug. You gave a soft sigh into the kiss and it was only when you were both out of breath that you reluctantly pulled apart.
Chuu pressed her forehead against yours and as you opened your eyes you saw her swollen lips stretched into a smile.
"I've wanted to do that for the longest time," she murmured before leaning in to peck your lips again.
"Yeah? Well so have I," you smirked back running your thumbs along her cheekbones before leaning in again to steal another kiss.
