The movies, they always have the girl who likes the guy, they become best friends, the guy loves a girl then they break up, and he realizes he loves his best friend. That’s not how reality goes, but there are always the few exceptions.
It was the first day before the end of winter break. The snow was drifting down for the 5th time this week with a total of 7 feet. It was official; Aubrey couldn’t see out of her living room window and yet still had to leave for a volleyball tournament in 30 minutes. Her birthday had passed and she went to Wal-mart with her friends-Rylee, Zoey, Trinity, and Victoria- to find a movie to watch. She noticed a guy that looked very familiar. He was adorable with his brown hair resting on his eyelashes all slightly to the left, his bright blue eyes, his tall posture, and perfect smile. Aubrey was only in the 9th grade and knew this perfect guy was in the 10th grade. He sat at the same table at lunch as her but they never talked. She knew that her best friend from volleyball texted him, so she decided to ask for his number.
January 3rd
California, volleyball tournament
Finally, the plane landed and we were away from the cold snow of West Virginia and into the warm sun of California. I had never seen how…bright the sky can be. The world seemed to spin the way it had when I saw him, Drew, the love of my life. “Aubrey! Can you believe we made it all the way to nationals?” Evelyn, my best volleyball friend, said almost screaming. “I know I am so excited. Two weeks full of volleyball, beach, parties, and no adults other than coach.” I said maybe too calmly as my mind wandered off. “Yea, but coach doesn’t count. She is only 22. Hey, Aubrey, are you already thinking about California guys?” Evelyn said as she flirt waved to a group of boys. “Well sort of but not really I am thinking about Drew. I think I saw him at Wal-Mart and I wanted to say hi.” I said half convincingly knowing she wouldn’t catch on. “Oh ok hold on I will get his number,” Evelyn searched through her bag, grabbed her sprint moment and looked up his number. “Its 199-7031-2137,” Evelyn said distracted by another text. “Thanks, ah thanks, um THANKS!” I started to yell and yet Evelyn still didn’t hear me. I pulled out my sprint rant and sent Evelyn a text.
Me: thanks for his number…what are you so distracted at?:D
Evelyn: oh your welcome and I got a text saying that drew is in love with Audrey…I am not surprised. He has been staring at her since last year.
Me: oh lol hope that works out
Evelyn: oh me too they are perfect for each other!:D
I wanted to cry. I felt like seven million bricks fell on me crushing me until I popped, but I never popped. The pain didn’t go away until, finally, we played volleyball. Volleyball was the only thing I loved, even though I was great at gymnastics it just wasnt the same feeling. We have our first volleyball game in fifteen minutes and I was completely ready except for my pump-up speech. “As captain I always give you a speech before a game, and we didn’t come all this way just to get a speech and one game so I want you to go out there and play your very best. We can win if we just focus and play our very best.” I said hoping it got them ready to play but quickly finding out that it did much more. My team the green zebras were already screaming and starting our chant “1, 2, 3, 4, all the zebras on the floor ahhhhhhhhh zebras!” We got to name our team ourselves, and we picked zebras because our colors were neon green and black strips. It was my serve first. I lined up to do my jump serve and it soared over. 25 aces in a row and that was the first game. We switched sides and exchanged high fives, but now it was the other teams serve. It came over and Crystal made a perfect pass to Hannah who made a beautiful set to me and I made my best kill ever. We had regained the serve and it was Hannah’s serve. Although she only has her overhand serve she also made 24 aces. We had won our first game in California and we couldn’t help but laugh, cry, and scream. We were all excited, especially for the 2nd round mixer. It was a dance party at a club with 25 girl’s teams and 6 guy’s teams. After getting into a dark purple dress, Evelyn, Hannah and I went to the mixer. It was a formal dance and I was wearing dark purple, Evelyn was wearing black, and Hannah was wearing dark blue. Although I was about to go to the party of the year and Mtv was going to shoot it live all I could think about was drew. I knew we had to look amazing and we did; our whole team did. We all piled into our stretch limo and took a vote. Callie was voted best dressed; Evelyn was voted prettiest face without make-up; I was voted prettiest all together. Even the party of the year couldn’t distract me from drew. I pulled my phone out of my purse and sent him a message.
