Chapter 2
I stared dully through the dirty window of the coffee shop, looking out at the busy streets filled with people doing their last minute Christmas shopping, rushing through the streets holding bags from stores I didn't recognize. With a sigh I resumed wiping the stain off the booths, watching the door for customers. Seeing no one, I placed my earbuds in my ears and switched the song to "believer" by American authors. Singing along I did my work, cleaning the shop and mixing drinks. I was too engrossed in my music to notice the high-pitched ring of the door chimes, or the man walking towards the counter. I jumped at his touch as he tapped my shoulder, grinning widely.
"Hello there, I couldn't help but notice you have a beautiful voice," he chuckled, placing his elbow on the counter, "so tell me. What's a beautiful girl like you doing at a shop like this?"
"Same as all the other 17-year old girls working in coffee shops," I spoke, looking down at the counter, "making drinks."
"A joker, I see. Didn't know it was a joke shop."
"Funny. What can I get you?"
"I'll have a decaf and your number, please."
"A joker, I see."
He laughed, his dark blue eyes sparkling as he tucked his dark brown hair into his hat. "I try."
Handing him his drink, exchanging it for the 5 pounds he held in his hand, I thanked him for his business and resumed wiping the counter. When he still hadn't left, I looked up at him, finding him staring intently at me.
"Um... Anything else I can do for you?" I asked, confused as to why he hadn't left.
"I believe I asked for your number with this coffee?" he winked at me, earning an eye roll in response.
"If I give you my number, will you leave?"
"I most certainly will."
I wrote down "my number" on a piece of paper I had on the counter and gave it to him.
"Pleasure doing business with ya." I chuckled, putting my headphones back in.
"Now now, no need to be that way," he chuckled, leaning over the counter, "I'll just wait here."
"I don't even know your name."
"My name is Matt. Nice to meet you," he stuck his hand out to engulf mine in a friendly shake, "now get writing."
I sighed, defeated, and wrote my phone number on a cup holder at my left. Handing it to him, I returned to my work, placing my headphones in my ears.
"Expect a call soon, have a good day beautiful," he said with a wink. I scowled and continued scrubbing the counter in front of me.
-------------------------------
"You want me to change, change, change, you want me to change!" my ringtone blared through the small apartment I escaped to and I rushed to answer the call. A number I didn't recognize popped up on the screen and I pressed the green button, bringing it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Hi there beautiful, how was your day?"
Matt. Joy.
"It's Matt by the way. Sorry I didn't call you sooner, I was a bit swamped at work. Anyway, would you like to go out to coffee sometime? I have the afternoon off tomorrow, I could meet you somewhere..."
"I don't know..." I spoke, unsure of myself.
"Come on, just one time. We can get to know each other better, I'm very interested in what goes on under your beautiful head of hair," I could almost hear him grin and smirk at the other end of the line. I rolled my eyes at his playful flirting.
"Fine. Just once. How's Starbucks at 2?"
"Wow, isn't that sort of betraying your shop?"
"Oh shut up. I can still say no."
His booming laughter comes through my phone as he says "see you then. Have a wonderful day, beautiful," and hangs up. I sigh, going back to cleaning the tiny, one room basement apartment I have called home for about 314 days. But hey, who's counting?
