Chapter 1

As evening approached Meteor City, an ominous storm rolled in. Thunder clashed as lightning ribboned across the sky in stuttered waves. Heavy blankets of rain pelted against the city's littered landscape as stragglers ran for cover.

In the outskirts of the city, another storm raged.

"She no go!"

The exclamation echoed throughout the abandoned building.

"Come on, why not?" Nobunaga pressed, "Afraid she can't handle it?"

The splintering crash of a crate bursting against the wall reverberated in the room.

"She no troupe member! No need go," Feitan seethed.

"She-"

Nobunaga's rebuttal was promptly interrupted by a lingering shadow.

"Then why is she here?"

Feitan paused to watch the shadow as a crack of lightning lit up the room.

The troupe members observed as their leader emerged from the darkened corner.

"Hmmm," Chrollo hummed.

"She will go and she will prove herself to remain with you."

A thick silence hung in the air. The statement was clear, this was not an optional task.

Clutching his fists, Feitan struggled with how to respond.

"Fei..." A soft voice drew his attention.

Looking up, Feitan locked eyes on the source.

Coal clashed with bright sapphire.

"I'll be ok," the voice assured.

Passing a hesitant glance at the leader, they continued, "I can handle myself."

An annoyed grunt of acceptance passed from the troupe member, but nothing more was said.

After a pause, he flicked his gaze back to Chrollo.

"When leave?"

Observing the male, Chrollo spoke "You will have tonight with Mei. She leaves at dawn."

"Actually... I think I should leave now," Mei spoke. "I don't want to miss the exam."

Nodding, Chrollo turned and strolled towards the shadows once more.

"As you wish. Dismissed," The leader called over his shoulder.

Slowly the Phantom Troupe members dispersed into the rainy city.

"Have fun Mei!" An exuberant Shalnark waved.

"Break a neck kid," Uvogin chuckled.

With a smile, Mei offered a soft wave to the disappearing troupe.

Turning to face the one member she knew would linger, Mei sighed.

"I'll be fine-"

Flinching back, she caught the fist that was thrown at her while breathing out a sharp wince.

"Better be. Raised you strong, not weak," Feitan spoke.

Releasing his fist, Mei giggled before launching herself forward.

Stumbling back, the male struggled to pull the female off of him.

"Awh Fei, It'll be ok!" She exclaimed. "I'll be back to you in no time."

At this, Feitan's struggles slowly ceased.

With a serious face, he spoke, "Will not be there to protect."

Leaning back, Mei smiled, "Things are different now. I can protect myself."

Ruffling her hair lightly, Feitan's eyes softened.

"No one can know," he reminded. "Not safe."

With a smile, Mei hugged Feitan tighter.

"Of course... brother."
