MYRA

I lingered by the timber, waiting for those patrolling wolves to disappear. A cold sweat broke on my forehead as I watched the wolves take their time to check everything in the area.

They were completely unexpected. It wasn't their usual patrolling routine. I had their usual routines well memorized, which was why I had chosen this route to sneak out of the pack with the mushrooms this afternoon.

However, those patrolling wolves were a big surprise for me. I couldn't help but wonder if someone had tipped one of the Alphas of this pack about someone selling mushrooms from here. I'd be in massive trouble if that were the case.

The Alphas of the Nightfall pack— Mateo and Hunter King were ruthless when dealing with smuggling and theft— which was exactly what I was doing right now. I had stolen some trippy mushrooms from the woods in our territory and was trying to sneak out of the pack with them to sell them in the nearby human market.

They paid a hefty price for these mushrooms, and I considered it too good of an opportunity to let it go. I had been doing this for the past year and hadn't gotten in trouble yet. It was because no one paid any attention to a no-one like me. Also, no one in the pack knew the worth of the mushrooms. To the pack members, the mushrooms were just some wild fungi not worth eating, but they didn't know the kind of price those unassuming-looking mushrooms could fetch. Their oblivion to this vital fact had served me well so far, but I was afraid that this secret of the mushrooms wouldn't be hidden for long.

When the patrollers finally disappeared, I searched the area and tried to pick up any scents in the gently blowing breeze. When I couldn't sense anyone around me, I stepped out of hiding and dashed for the pack border.

I was late for my meeting with a customer, and I was afraid that if I didn't show up on time, then they'd leave. It'd be a massive headache for me because then I'd have to keep the mushrooms with myself and preserve them somewhere for the next deal day. Being caught travelling with the mushrooms would land me in huge trouble because then it'd be considered theft.

Everything that grew in the pack territory was the pack's property. Sure, everything was free to be used by the pack members, and they could always barter things with another pack member, but taking something from the pack and selling it outside without either of the Alpha's permission was considered theft even if the said thing was a pound of dried leaves. Nothing could be sold outside the pack without the Alphas' permission. And considering the kind of cash the mushrooms fetched, I could get in even bigger trouble.

The fear of getting caught made me run faster. I was so preoccupied with the thought and somehow making it out of the territory that I didn't notice the overbearing presence of a wolf right behind me until it was too late.

I was pinned to the ground all of a sudden as the heavy weight above me knocked all the air out of my lungs. I inhaled dirt in the process, sending me into a sneezing fit instantly while my windpipe seemed to grow narrow, restricting my breaths. The weight on top of me wasn't helping me at all.

I managed to groan, but a thunderous growl above me reverted through the woods, making my wolf pace inside me, but for an entirely different reason. Despite the insane urge to keep sneezing, I froze for a second as the realization hit me that I'd been caught... caught by none other than one of the Alphas of my pack.

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

I heard the sound of bones snapping behind me while I tried to get the mud out of my watery eyes. The backpack in which I had all the mushrooms was ripped from my back before my hands were pinned behind me. I was then tugged back to my feet by a very naked Alpha Hunter.
