Kingston Briar
I had been having weird dreams the past few nights. My wolf would warn me, no alert me, that our mate was near. This time I dreamt of her face. A weak human girl. She had deep brown eyes and wavy shoulder length brown hair. I stirred awake when I heard my bedroom door creak. Immediately my body reacted to her presence. My mate was here, standing at the door watching to make sure I was asleep. What the hell was going on? I pretended to be asleep and listened for the door to click shut.
"Why are you here?" I muttered to myself as I climbed out of my bed and slipped into some clothes.
Quietly I slipped into the hallways of my home tracking her until I found her. She exclaimed in content as she found my library. I frowned watching as she slipped inside. I kept my distance but stalked her out of my own curiosity. My eyes widened in shock as she bypassed the security measures with ease. A smirk pulled at the corners of my lips as I stepped into the door way. She turned to face me eyes wide in shock as I growled in warning.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I growled.
I could see the gears moving in her head as she searched for an exit. She held my crown tightly in her delicate hands as she panicked. If I wanted to I could easily capture her right in this moment. My eyes wandered her small frame and I smiled as I heard her thoughts loud and clear. She thought I was hot. Abruptly she tried to force away the thoughts of me so I decided to speak again.
"Hmmm who are you?" I asked her.
I lowered my guard hoping to possibly take part in a conversation with my little mate. She froze up and I saw her shift her weight nervously. I had to work very hard to keep myself from scaring the little human. She had no clue how much she was tempting my wolf right now. That's when I caught myself. I had already been moving towards her. When she pulled further away I stepped closer again. Was she afraid of me? I reared back in surprise as I tripped my own alarm. When I glanced back up to where my mate was she was already gone. Sneaky little thief. Taking a deep breath I yelled out into the night.
"I'll find you!" I growled, knowing full well I'd have her by my side in no time.
It didn't take much communication with my pack before they had her location for me. I quickly made my way to where I knew Henric had her. Henric was scaring her when I got there. I growled in warning making him back off. Suddenly my little mate spun around to see me. Her face paled slightly and I smirked in amusement.
"The moon sure is beautiful tonight." I said hoping to make her react even more to me.
She tried to run but Henric tripped her. I glared at him and helped her up after she caught her breath. I could tell her mind was trying to compute everything. She was in shock. She looked at me and unintentionally I read her thoughts again. She was curious about me.
"Ah right. Let me introduce myself. I'm Kingston Briar." I offered her my hand acting politely.
Instead my politeness deterred her even more. She began overthinking her capture and failed heist. She was shocked I hadn't asked for the crown. Oh right. My crown. She tried to explain she knew who I was but I shut her down. I held my hand out as I asked for the crown. Of course she didn't move and instead began to overthink. Damn was she an overthinker.
"Give it up. You're not completing whatever job they sent you here to do. Hand me my crown and we can discuss what happens next." I said, sighing inwardly.
"Did you just read my mind?!" She exclaimed and I smiled slightly.
I glanced away and told her no. I knew she wouldn't be able to handle learning about supernatural abilities quite yet. Abruptly she pulled me away from my thoughts of how innocent and cute she was.
"Why is this crown so important?" She asked.
"You really don't know anything do you? You have no idea what you're getting involved in." I said with surprise.
"What do you mean?" She questioned completely oblivious to the fact she had tried to steal the werewolf royal crown.
I wonder who had hired her. They expected giving this job to a human was smart but all her superior had done is rope her into a world of pain and torture. I eyed her carefully. There must be something I'm missing. What made her special? There was no way the vampires who sent her here to steal from me could have known I was her mate. So why her?
"You know nothing Kaitlyn Forger. That's what I mean." I growled at her with warning.
My wolf surfaced threatening to take control. I contained myself but I could see her working through everything. She suspected I wasn't human. As a human though she merely thought the supernatural was silly stories. As her heart rate sped up I chuckled. My mate was in for a wild ride now.
"You're observant. And perceptive. Of course you'll figure it out sooner or later." I said trying to be reassuring but instead making alarms go off in her head.
"What are you?" She asked me weakly.
I felt my heart pound in my chest. I'd at least give her one detail. We would figure out the rest together as everything progressed. Full of pride I told her I was her mate and that it was the only thing that mattered. I took the crown from her as she thought about my words.
"Take this back to my house and lock it up." I ordered Henric as I passed him my crown.
"Yes alpha king." He replied and I growled in appreciation.
I turned back to my mate hoping now that the crown business was out of the way I could focus more on me and her. Much to my dismay however she was gone. Damn did she like to run from me. I growled as I chased after her scent into the woods. As I searched for her I realised she was swifter than I thought. How could she have such a lead on me? I was debating shifting to my wolf form so I could find her faster.
"Kaitlyn!" I yelled hoping she might make a sound so that I could track her better.
It didn't go to plan however as I heard a gut wrenching scream and snapping of branches. She had fallen. Concern rushed through me as I quickly located her at the bottom of a rocky hill. Anger burned through me as I saw her laying at the base unconscious. Weak human, stupid human. I descended the hill and knelt down to check her over. She would be okay. I sighed in relief and cursed myself out for letting this happen. I scooped her up into my arms.
"My stupid human." I growled to myself as I carried her back in the direction of my house.
I looked down at her unconscious face. Her light pink lips and button nose had me clenching my jaw. Her pale skin begged me to place gentle kisses all over her. I groaned knowing I would have to restrain myself from her until she came to me. She was a weak human. Mine to protect, I would not let myself hurt her.
