People like to believe that bad guys are born. They're wrong. Bad guys are created, or forced because they have to to feed themselves. Either way, they aren't born.
So, why is it that cops and superhero's never feel the need to help them out? Understand why they are the way they are before just assuming they were truly bad? Before assuming that they just didn't care about anything?
It's what Willabelle asked herself when she met Joker and before she changed and became "Willy".
Growing up she was abused. Mentally, physically, emotionally. She was bullied in school for the bruises she had. The dirty clothes she always wore cause she didn't know how to do laundry, really anything. Whatever the kids could find to bully her about they did.
Between the bullying and her abusive home life, she was depressed. Like slit her wrist, try to kill herself multiple times depressed.
All the way up until college where she met her bestfriend Harleen Quinzel, who unknowingly saved her life. They were both trying to get their phD. Which they did and ended up working at the same asylum.
Harleen Quinzel and Willabelle Cunningham were the best friends of best friends. They were alike with their horrible home lives as kids.
Soon after, Willabelle got fired from the asylum for helping break The Joker out, and she told Harleen everything she had done. Harleen kept it a secret. She was shocked hearing what her best friend had done, breaking Joker out, killing people. Harleen didn't ditch her though, she wouldn't no matter what.
Willabelle eventually talked Harleen into joining them. Harleen was convinced after hearing how she could get back at her family for always trying to get rid of her as a child, and how much better she could feel. Willabelle didn't force her into it, it was Harleen's own choice to change.
So, Harleen Quinzel and Willabelle Cunningham became Harley Quinn and Willy Cunningham and Willy and The Joker fell more in love with each other, while Harley and The Joker became bestfriends, obviously Harley would always choose Willy over The Joker, and the same for The Joker. He would chose Willy over Harley. Willy on the other hand wouldn't be able to choose. Well, she could, deep down she knows she would chose her bestfriend over anyone, but she wouldn't say it out loud. At least not to The Joker.
