The sky was getting progressively darker as we got closer to home. He was taking a turn at driving, and I sat in the front passenger seat, absentmindedly scrolling through Twitter on my phone.

"Don't fall asleep, Phil."

"Never mind me Dan, concentrate on staying awake yourself."

"I'm fine."

"You sure you don't want me to take over? You should take a break."

"I already said I'm fine."

There was no point arguing with him. I sighed, and settled back in my seat.

"Pull over if you want to swap, Dan."

"Mm."

We both went quiet after that. I locked my phone and tucked my knees up to my chest. It was a weird position to sit in, but I liked sitting that way when I was in cars. I think I probably fell asleep...

"Crap."

My head shot up.

I registered bright headlights and the sudden sensation that we were going far too fast.

"Dan!" The word lodged in my throat.

"Phil, I can't-"

Something slammed into the car, and I threw my arms up to protect my face as the windscreen shattered, showering both me and Dan in shards of glass.

-

It took a few seconds for everything to sink in.

We crashed.

No, someone crashed into us.

There was glass everywhere.

About four voices were shouting simultaneously.

And I couldn't hear Dan's voice.

"D-Dan?" I could hear the tremor in my own voice, and I sounded so small. I tried to cough to clear my throat, but it didn't come out. "Dan. What just happened?"

He didn't reply.

"Dan!" Black spots were appearing in the corners of my vision, not going when I tried to blink them away.

Then there was someone pulling the passenger side door open, but all I could see was a face-shaped blur, and the unfamiliar voice sounded far away. Something cold touched my face, but I couldn't even move away. I suddenly just wanted to sleep, and my eyelids kept sliding closed.

"No, no, stay awake... Stay with me, look at me, keep your eyes open, there's an ambulance coming. You're going to be okay."

I tried to ask about Dan, but I couldn't fight my brain's instinct to shut down.
